Lane Kiffin may deserve all the heat aimed his direction. This should be the best of times for Ole Miss, likely College Football Playoff-bound and entering its rivalry game, and instead, a cloud hangs over it. The possibility that Kiffin could decide not to coach in the Playoff, to instead take a job at LSU or Florida, may be seen as unforgivable by the heel of the sport.

Or we could see it for what it is: A screwed-up situation in a screwed-up sport.

The bigger villain here is the college football calendar, which caused this to happen. And this should be a clarion call for college football power brokers to do what they should anyway: Move the season up. Go back to playing the national championship on or around Jan. 1, then get on with the offseason, rather than the current setup.

Paywall, but you get the gist..

Yeah, the gist of what I’ve been saying from the jump. The timing sucks but it’s the NCAA’s fault.

All it took was for Saban to go on a rant about the calendar and suddenly the media is all against the calendar.

Saban also pushed for Kiffin to come to LSU

Yeah there’s nothing he can do about it if he wants the LSU job.

Kiffin absolutely wants to coach out this season if he could but if he’s leaving he has to be focused on the portal and it coincides with the playoffs. It sucks and he’s going to catch a lot of flak for something he has no control over

Agree with this completely, which is why it will never happen.

It’s so ridiculous that signing day is two weeks away.

I heard Bruce Feldman and Stuart Mendel debating the calendar and how to fix it

One idea they had that I actually like is just have one portal window in the spring and that way players that transfer don’t get to go through spring practice with the new team.

They have to do something about teams losing over 50% of the roster every year and give players some incentive to stick around.

Start the season on the last weekend of August: 10 regular-season games, nine conference games, one out-of-conference power-four game, one open date.

Regular season would wrap up mid November.

Need to go back to early February.

We can also bring back the signing day party.

In a perfect world the calendar would mirror the NFL’s calendar. Unfortunately, there is also an academic calendar. The SEC just needs to all agree to adjust the academic calendar to match the NFL calendar and things will be fine. /s

That’s bullshite. What if LK was vying for the championship in the old system?

Same situation. The calendar isn’t the problem.

The problem is OM can’t compete with top programs and NIL just widened the gap.

Calendar is crap. He would still be choosing to leave a playoff team at the end of the day. That isn’t being forced on him

Colleges use semesters. There is really not much to do. Unless you stop all the early enrollees and have one signing day in Feb. Move the transfer portal to May after spring. But you need those players for spring.

We have literally had our best 5 year run since the 50s and 60s because of NIL.

Correct. And you have dumbasses thinking Lane is drumming up this drama.
Even worse, these openings came mid season.

Pull your head out of your arse. Ole Miss is one of the inventors and perfectors of the NIL model, and our supporters give like crazy.

People act like the NCAA arbitrarily did all of this without any input/demand from the coaches.

The COACHES wanted an early signing day.
The COACHES did not want a spring transfer portal window.

How do you propose the calendar should be changed and also meet the desires of the coaches?

If you push NSD back to 1 date in February, the coaches will bitch. They want the ESD so they aren't having to spend two months "protecting" their commits.

The transfer portal opens 1/2 and closes 1/16. The coaches want their new transfer signed and enrolled so the players can participate in winter workouts/spring football. The further back you push the portal opening the less likely players could transfer to new schools AND be able to enroll for classes at those new schools for the spring semester.

Should the portal open in December? That won't change anything
Should it open in late Jan/early Feb? Maybe. But then many transfers won't be able to enroll in their new schools for the spring...meaning a wasted 3 months.

Lane can’t blame the calendar. This article is cop-out culture at work. That’s like blaming guns for gun crime. The calendar is a circumstance that 100% of the college football world has to live within. He’s not special in this regard.
