More November 20 greatness:"Irish Stew for LSU" on this date in 1971

LSU became the first team to host two nationally televised prime time games during the same season in college football. 7th ranked Notre Dame came to down 8-1-0 for their last game (after going 45 years with out a bowl and playing in 1969 they decided to sit out 1971.) Tiger Stadium was at its best that night as the crowd was insane. Statistically it was a weird game as Notre Dame actually had more yards, first downs, total plays and time of possession but LSU won, 28-8 based on three goal line stands.
While not the cover, Sports Illustrated had a full article about the game written by Dale Brown's future buddy, Billy Reed (IYKYK) entitled,"Irish Stew for LSU."
"Irish Stew for LSU"
Notre Dame at LSU highlights Nice abbreviated clip with ABC tv broadcast and LSU's John Ferguson with the radio voice over.

I’ve heard about that game so many times from my dad who was there, I feel like I was too.

That's some good stuff, crowd was loud. My dad had tickets in the N EZ for 70+ years and I got kicked to the curb by my mom for that game.

I was there. 13 years old.
One of the loudest games I have been to in Tiger Stadium, even without the upper decks.

Andy Hamilton was my hero. Was it Clarence Ellis that he jukked out of his jock on a TD?

I was there as well. Revenge was the biggest factor. The previous year LSU lost 3-0 to Notre Dame in South Bend on a phantom interference call late in the game that set up the winning field goal.

My family had moved to Baton Rouge at the beginning of the summer that year. I was only 8. My Dad a Southern Miss grad always disliked ND because the media would always prop them up. He tells the story to this day about the TV announcers saying the "The Great Notre Dame" this and "The Great Notre Dame" that pregame. LSU came out and whipped their arse and my Dad has been a diehard LSU fan ever since. He just turned 88 and pretty much is always wearing an LSU hat unless he is at church or sleeping in bed.

Saw it on TV. Revelled in the arse-kicking.

I have that SI. my cousin somehow wound up with Andy Hamilton’s helmet in his hands. He told me that Andy told him he could have it , cause they were pulling everything else off of him. He thought about it and wound up handing it back to him.

I watched it on tv with my dad. It was a sweet win. Those were the days when the Tigers were on maybe 2 games a year.
