A Gustav Klimt portrait painting that helped save the life of its Jewish subject during the Holocaust sold Tuesday for $236.4 million, a record for a modern art piece.
Klimt's “Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer” sold after a 20-minute bidding war at Sotheby’s in New York
The 6-foot-tall (1.8-meter-tall) portrait, painted over three years between 1914 and 1916, depicts the daughter of one of Vienna's wealthiest families adorned in an East Asian emperor’s cloak. It is one of two full-length portraits by the Austrian artist that remain privately owned. The work was kept separate from other Klimt paintings that burned in a fire at an Austrian castle.
The colorful painting depicts the Lederer family's life of luxury before Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938. Nazis looted the Lederer art collection, leaving only the family portraits, which were considered “too Jewish” to be worth stealing, according to the National Gallery of Canada, where the painting was previously on loan.

I think it belonged to an Estee Lauder heir.
I would need to understand how the buyer would clean that money relatively quickly. This thing likely wont see auction again for another 20 years.

I like how he subtly captured her mustache hair.

In an attempt to save herself, Elisabeth Lederer made up a story that Klimt, who was not Jewish and died in 1918, was her father. It helped that the artist spent years working meticulously on her portrait.

"Oh, Thornton, your wife was just showing us her Klimt."
"You too, huh? She shows it to everybody."

It was. Both Ronald and Leonard (Lauder heirs) were prolific art collectors. This was part of Leonard's collection and hung in his private NY residence for most of the time and was rarely on display publicly (which likely drove up the price). It also has an interesting history behind it.
Ronald was the one who purchased one of the most famous Klimts, "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" (The Woman in Gold) after Maria Altmann (Adele's niece) legally pushed for Austria to return the painting to them since it was acquired through Nazi raids by the Austrian museum. I believe he paid $135 million for that one in 2006 but it was under the condition that it remain on public display here in the US.
I'm a Klimt fan, but they're much cooler to see in person because of the textures used.

To each his own but with something that insignificant , I’d imagine there’s more to the value than they are letting us know. We can all speculate what laundering operation this satisfies
