Bozeman Montana Real Estate, wow -

A friend of mine got a tenure-track professorship offer at a University there but he might have to turn it down because he says the prices to buy or rent are completely crazy. I laughed, thinking he was just being cranky, but yikes.
Not knowing any better I thought for something in the range of 300k-400k he should be able to buy something very nice.

For a million or close to it, something very nice. This?

No knock on the state or its fine people, I don't know how people can afford to live there. And I am a guy who rolls his eyes at real estate price complaints usually.

Tons of CA money out there buying property and houses sight unseen. Such a beautiful area

its insane and you have to deal with -40 degree winters.
i love montana but no way in hell i'd spend that kind of money to live somewhere that cold.

Apart from crappy snow and ice days, he could live pretty car out (Belgrade etc) and still have a very short commune, time wise.

There are equally “nice” places to live that are much cheaper
Look at St George Utah or Grand Junction CO as well as some areas of Idaho

Yep. Buddy has a house near the university. He’s a fishing guide and she’s a teacher. Bought about 20 years ago at $300k and it’s worth 1.5mil now. And it’s not real nice. They rent out the lower level basement to students to pay the note and to survive.

Yeah, he’s going to commute to Montana from Utah.

Beautiful scenery and almost no crime. You get what you pay for.

Get away from Bozeman, Missoula, and the heavily touristy areas and Montana is very affordable. But, as has been said, it gets freaking COLD! Even once it warms up, the runoff from the snowmelt screws up any hopes of fly fishing until June (or longer).
I'd be fine living in Montana from July through early November and then bailing out for warmer climes for a few months.

tenure-track professorship offer
What field? I know a few people in academia. Not really big money especially considering how many years it takes to get there. And those tenure track positions are hard to come by.

While Yellowstone has a ton of overdramatized crap in it, the film isn't completely a lie.

Nothing adds to the charm better than a built-in window unit supported by a 2x10...

So the salary for a tenure-track position doesn't take into account the current real estate prices of the area? They may have some issue finding experienced people.

What’s the property taxes on that?

ITT: people discover white flight ain't cheap.

All that California money moved out there and are forcing the neighbors out with high property taxes now. Montana may go blue in the next decade from those idiots voting for the same shite they got away from.

Land around Bozeman is a lot cheaper. Definitely don’t live in the city, it’s boring and overpriced.
