How come dogs have legal protections but pigs don't?

Pigs are actually more intelligent than dogs and dust dogs on all of the different smart animal tests (1A). Also, there's really no reason for people in modern society to eat pigs, aside from the fact that pigs are delicious. If you lived a hundred years ago or if you live in the jungle now and don't have access to other fats and fatty acids that the body needs, that makes sense and whatever.

There's not a second that goes by when someone isn't killing a pig and cutting it up so people can eat it.

But if someone kills a dog and cuts it up so people can eat it, they are arrested andhave to hire a lawyer and their mug shot is on the late local news and they lose their job and nobody wants to be their friend anymore.

Sometimes social norms doen't seem all that normal.

•••1A - Pigs outperform dogs overall. They master complex tasks faster, like using mirrors for self-recognition (a rare cognitive milestone dogs lack) and operating joysticks to play video games. Pigs solve puzzles (e.g., retrieving food via tools or levers) with fewer trials, showing superior executive function. In social intelligence, pigs recognize human faces, follow pointing gestures, and deceive conspecifics strategically—behaviors dogs excel at but pigs match or exceed in lab tests.

If dogs tasted like bacon you would have a valid argument.

Do they? I don’t know.

pigs have legal protections, especially if the pig is classified as a companion animal vs food animal

Dogs, on average, are cuter than pigs.
Pigs, on average, taste better than dogs.

You’re welcome.

It’s just the most obvious and popular answer. But yes, very valid food points you have.

I don’t believe that at all.

I would slaughter pigs for a guy years ago for pig roasting parties.

You go in the pen and throw feed to distract the pigs.

Take a 22 and shoot the pig behind the ear.

Then before they start flopping , you slice the throat so they can bleed out before their blood coagulates.

Every time I did that, the unfortunate pigs buddies through the whole process would just sit there eating their feed, even with the blood running in it.

Try that with a pack of dogs… I’m sure they have enough sense to know what’s going on.

Our neighbors in MT had a series of pot-bellied pigs and maybe some other variety for years. The pig was disappear after a year or so. Then a few days/weeks later a new one would appear. Rinse, eat, repeat.

This isn’t the country. Old neighborhood with pretty small lots. They clearly treated it like a pet until…they didn’t.

If dog tasted like pigs, we'd be eating them historically and now... people didnt give a damn about a dog personality when they were starving.
