Question for who gets Lane

Hypothetically let’s say ole miss makes the playoffs and isn’t announced to the new school until after his current team loses in the playoffs. This could be after the transfer portal. Wouldn’t this mean he would have no opportunity to bring in players for the 26 year and it would just be whoever didn’t leave from thus year?

He is staying at OM

I agree, he is using all this as pay raise, even though he says he it isn't about the money.

Okay great so what if he or any other playoff coach decided to leave? I’m honestly curious and not trying to get in a pissing match about if he leaves or not. It would seem like for the 26 season you would have to accept sucking unless I’m mistaken about a rule.

Who cares about the transfer portal... If you can get the best coach now in college football. It would be well worth the wait.
Without going into the transfer portal, the roster is already better than mississippi's

You think the LSU roster with the players that will be leaving is better than ole miss roster? Man we have some interesting fans.

When a coach leaves a program isn’t there a week or two where those players can transfer out? This would be outside the normal transfer window. I would assume a bunch of players would follow Lane wherever he goes.

Making a coaching decision based on the transfer portal closing time is like making a car-buying decision based on the gas station closing time.

The new rule is the portal doesn't open until 5 days after a new permanent coach is hired. So any school loosing their coach has time for the new coach to convince the roster to stay and for the NIL collective to offer up more money. Some kids will still leave, but it won't be flood gates like the prior rule/seasons.

Awesome this is what I was curious about, thank you.

This is a consideration for any hire in the playoffs
Same is true for Lane or anyone else - the risk is waiting until you're in a bad spot and and the coach changing his mind. That wasn't the situation with Lane and Auburn (it was late November) but the whole family intervention saga was a last minute thing after a couple of weeks of negotiation and, according to all sides I think, an agreement in principle.
I don't know that something like that would be likely for UF (or LSU) this time around, but it's the risk, and if it happened you'd be in a bad portal situation and presumably have some of your other candidates off the board and situated at their new schools already.

I agree, but would it be worth it for Lane?

He is the best available coach east of the mississippi river

I think he'd entertain the NY Giants job.

He already has the pay raise. He has an extension offer in hand that would make him the highest paid coach in CFB. He hasn't signed it, even though he knows that it is creating doubt that could distract his team from a playoff run.
This 100% means he is listening to offers and is open to leaving. He may stay, but if he was dead set on staying at OM, he would've signed the extension a couple weeks ago and put all this to bed.
Actions speak louder than words and his actions say he isn't completely sold on staying at OM.

I guarantee you he’s not.

Perhaps. He's definitely the biggest name available east of the Mississippi...unless Saban is available.

I just don't see Lane staying at OM forever, but he can probably take 2-4 years to make a move if he's going to leave. I don't see his star burning out in the very near term.
My best guess is that Lane is looking for the opportunity that will be upper echelon-final CFB stop type stuff, but will not throw him into a tumult that destroys the personal progress he's made at Ole Miss. Not sure how UF fits that. I don't think LSU does. Wait on Texas?
Of course, if he has serious NFL aspirations all of this is probably out the window.

I would happily sacrifice the 2026 season if it means we get Kiffin.
