Is the USA failing at education?

Or more appropriately, why is the populace so uneducated?
In 1966 when I graduated from Baton Rouge High School, That diploma was pretty much a given that you had passed civics, were fluent in English, could read and write and could solve math problems and Algebra. Today's graduate, not so sure that is still true. Why?
Teachers Union, lack of dedication and interest in the students, devalued diploma, Wasted time in classroom devoted to subjects not related to learning. The National test overall prove the decline. Sure there are still those who excel, but I am talking about the average student. I also wonder if this dumbing down has an effect on voter's not being able to research and read candidates qualifications. Also wonder whether immigration and non English speaking students have a negative effect? Something is wrong witht the education system. I not sure how best to fix it. Thoughts?

No, we have the best schools. Especially in the inner cities. Always good when half the students can’t read.
Trump failed here too. Didn’t fix it in 10 months.

No child left behind ensured that all education is to the lowest common denominator.

It’s failing every where. We are in a spiral. AI and Robots may be the only thing that produces us out of the financial hole we’re in.

Let me frame it this way. The educational industrial complex does not want Americans employed. Trades were dropped almost everywhere. Those jobs didn't go away and in fact became more in demand. More recently we've seen the same on the white collar side resulting in the large H1B imports.

The elephant in the room is single parent households. No value of education on the home front. Teacher unions are down on the list. Administrators need to ensure teachers teach the curriculum as approved by the board. Too many district administrators have no clue what is going on in the classroom on a daily basis. Admin is more at fault than unionized teachers because they don’t know how to properly manage teachers.

Woke curriculum and teachers unions.

Yes
The education system is tailored to the lowest common denominator
We used to have a system for the schools that worked better but the libs said it was bad

Federalized education, beginning under Bush Jr. and really setting sail under Obama, drastically changed K-12 and college curriculum. Extrapolate from that what you may.

Defund all public education.

Let me share an observation that many people may overlook, and it begins at home rather than in the classroom.
It requires a household where parents are actively engaged and well-informed about their child's education. This includes parents who regularly sit with their children to review their work and reinforce their understanding of the subject matter. It also involves parents who utilize available parent portals to monitor course progress and track grades.
My parents did this for me, and my wife and I have done the same for each of our children. Such involvement can significantly influence their development, often leading to positive outcomes. I have seen some criticize public education; however, both of my sons attended reputable public schools known for their academic standards. Neither of them has any college or postgraduate debt, thanks to earned academic scholarships.
Ultimately, the responsibility cannot rest solely on teachers to reach students. Parents must be actively involved.

Quick and simple answer is, yes. It's way more sinister than that though. This is by design and has been since the Rothchilds and Rockefellers funded and influenced the education system in this country. They didn't want to produce free and critical thinking students, they wanted people 'educated' just enough to become slaves to the system.
But, what really needs to happen is for parents to push and motivate their children to become critical thinkers, question everything, and seek truth. Don't let the damn TV and public schooling be there only means of influence.

Yes it is failing very badly in preparing the next generation for math and technology based careers. It is laughably bad

"failing" implies an attempt to do better than the current outcome and that isn't the case. what's going on in the intentional and orchestrated design to not educate but indoctrinate "students" and dumb-down the populace

We inherited my FIL's high school yearbook. One of his friends joked about how Al got through his Latin and Greek courses.
My Father's yearbook had a picture of him as a Senior with a mustache. Heck, that would have been forbidden 40+ years later when I was in high school.
I wouldn't say the USA is failing, I'd be more likely to shout out that parents are failing in so many ways.

It’s all about the parents. The buck starts and stops there.

Middle and High schools are day cares not education buildings. Hard to teach when the whole system caters to the bottom 10% who don't even want to be educated.
No Child Left Behind was a horrible horrible piece of legislation that destroyed what was left of the teen education system.

The USA is failing at education because too many of the kids have shitty parents who don't give AF.
