I had a new student in my Algebra II class. She was homeschooled previously, and this was her first experience in public school. Two days in, she’s already unerolling. I’m not surprised, given our last conversation.
Her words when I asked her what she thought: “I wanted to see what all the hype was and maybe go to prom, but this isn’t for me. Most of class is spent waiting for everyone to open their Chromebooks or figure out what to do after the teacher has literally said it 5 times. And, I can’t use the bathrooms because of all the vaping.”
I knew it wasn’t going to work when she brought back an entire unit packet (meant to be completed over 2 weeks) the next day. And no, she didn’t use AI. I asked her a few questions and she could explain the most difficult concepts verbally. She even offered her advice on how the sequencing of the packet could be improved.

Not all public schools are complete shite.
Not all homeschooled kids are little Einsteins.
And the parents are probably the biggest factor.

That was me in 9th grade after having homeschooled through jr high. Lasted until Halloween. Lol. Figured out easier/more entertaining ways to go to prom.

Well home school kids are a bit “different”

She should probably be teaching the class.

Public teachers are fighting a losing battle. They have no help from parents. And most money is spent on non necessary administration spending.

I can’t fathom being home schooled my entire life and then suddenly being dropped off at the very public junior high school/high school I went to. The culture shock would be wild.

im glad I was not homeschooled and I went to a good public school until I graduated. We would get some home schooled kids sometimes and they were usually a bit socially awkward, but often just good people. One of them ended being a very good friend.
The way it's going though, I would think home schooling is the superior option. Fewer and fewer of those good public schools exist.

Plenty of smart, hard-working kids in public and private schools, and plenty of dipshits getting home schooled. And vice versa.
But cool anecdotal story.

Idk look at the universities.
Not very welcoming to differing thoughts. Factories turning out intolerant Marxists.

So our education is shite and we are lacking talent

We homeschool, it’s not for everyone, and the older 3 weren’t always homeschooled
I work with youth at my church and it’s very interesting to see kids from all different backgrounds. But at the end of the day - it’s the parents just like another poster said.

Texas has tried to correct for this with gifted and talented programs starting at the kindergarten level, eventually feeding into advanced placement. Unfortunately the former is mostly directionless until ~grade 7(at least when I went through it), while the latter gets derailed mixing inattentive GT students with overachieving non-GT students

That's fricking stupid. Never on earth has someone vaping interfered with my ability to urinate or defecate. This country needs a war.
