After hearing some buzz on this coach I decided to do a deep dive to scout him as a potential coach for LSU next year. After doing so I can confidently endorse him for the job.

Thanks,

Yeah I like him.

It is a big time jump though. Many have face planted that weren’t ready for it.

No idea if he is but the contract would probably be pretty friendly to cut bait. Now LSU may feel like they can’t miss on this one and go “safe” but that’s how Scott landed on Kelly soooo

What kind of deep dive did you do? Hes had 2 successful season as a head coach in his career. 2021 10-3 (Incarnate Word) and this year at North Texas. Everything else has been 6 wins or less.

He did bring Incarnate Word to their first 2 appearances in the FCS playoffs in 2018 and 2021. And North Texas is a historical bottom feeder. If they get 10 wins this year it will be their first double digit win season in school history.

Eric Morris: Coaching History and Accolades
Eric Morris (born October 26, 1985) is a highly regarded offensive mind in college football, known for his Air Raid-style schemes influenced by mentors like Mike Leach and Kliff Kingsbury. At 40 years old, he's established a reputation for developing quarterbacks (e.g., Patrick Mahomes, Chandler Morris, Cameron Ward) and explosive offenses. His career spans from quality control roles to head coaching at the FCS and FBS levels. Below is a chronological overview of his coaching positions, records, and key accolades.
Coaching Timeline

2010: Houston Cougars – Quality Control Assistant
Entry-level role focused on film breakdown and logistics during his early post-playing career.

2011: Houston Cougars – Graduate Assistant (Wide Receivers)
Continued player development under Tony Levine, emphasizing special teams and receivers.

2012: Washington State Cougars – Inside Wide Receivers Coach
Reunited with Mike Leach; helped install the Air Raid offense, coaching slot receivers in a pass-heavy system.

2013: Texas Tech Red Raiders – Co-Offensive Coordinator/Inside Wide Receivers Coach
Shared OC duties under Kliff Kingsbury; offense ranked No. 2 nationally in passing (392.8 YPG) and No. 8 in total offense (511.0 YPG). Coached standout TE Jace Amaro (Big 12 record 106 receptions, 1,254 yards).

2014–2017: Texas Tech Red Raiders – Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers Coach
Promoted to full OC in 2014. Oversaw QB Patrick Mahomes' development (2016: 5,052 pass yds, 41 TDs; 2017: 4,683 yds, 36 TDs). Led RB DeAndré Washington to first 1,000-yard rushing season at Tech in over a decade (1,492 yds, 16 TDs, 2015). Coached 2016 NFL Draft picks: Le'Raven Clark (OT, 2nd round), DeAndré Washington (RB, 5th round), Jakeem Grant (WR, 6th round). Offenses consistently ranked top-20 nationally in scoring and yards.

2018–2021: Incarnate Word Cardinals (FCS) – Head Coach
Named head coach on Dec. 30, 2017. Turned around the program in the Southland Conference.
Record: 24–18 (.571)
2018: 6–5 (4–1 SLC), co-champs, FCS Playoff berth (first winning season since 2015).
2019: 5–7 (3–4 SLC).
2020: Spring 2021: 2–2 (COVID-shortened).
2021: 11–3 (6–2 SLC), SLC champs, FCS quarterfinalists (best finish in program history).
Key: Developed QBs like Zach Calzada; offenses averaged 38+ PPG in winning seasons.

2022: Washington State Cougars – Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach
Returned to Pullman under Jake Dickert. Led nation's No. 14 scoring offense (36.8 PPG) and No. 21 total offense (430.6 YPG). Coached QB Cameron Ward (3,244 pass yds, 23 TDs), discovering him as a JUCO transfer and turning him into a Heisman contender. Ranked No. 10 nationally in red-zone efficiency (91.5%).

2023–Present: North Texas Mean Green (FBS, AAC) – Head Coach
Hired Dec. 13, 2022, as the 20th head coach in program history. Transformed UNT into an offensive juggernaut, with top-10 national rankings in total offense each year. Contract extended through 2029 (as of Oct. 2025).
Record (through Nov. 9, 2025): 24–16 (.600) at UNT; overall head coaching: 48–34 (.585).
2023: 5–7 (3–5 AAC); set program records: 328.2 passing YPG (No. 6 nat'l), 488.8 total YPG (3rd in UNT history), 33.5 PPG (7th). One of four FBS teams with 3K passer, 1K rusher, and 1K receiver (led by son Chandler Morris: 3,202 pass yds).
2024: 6–7 (4–4 AAC); bowl-eligible; ~32 PPG (top-25 nat'l). Lost First Responder Bowl (37–31 vs. Texas State).
2025: 8–1 (5–1 AAC as of Nov. 9); best start since 1959, tied for AAC lead. Leads non-Power 4 in scoring (44.4 PPG, No. 9 nat'l); total offense ~500 YPG (top-5). QB Drew Mestemaker: No. 3 nat'l in pass YPG (300.2). Defense improved dramatically (top-40 YPG allowed). Bowl-eligible; eyeing AAC title and CFP auto-bid.

Accolades and Achievements
Conference Championships: 3 (2018 & 2021 Southland co-champs at UIW; potential 2025 AAC at UNT).
Postseason Appearances: 3 (2 FCS playoffs at UIW: 2018 first round, 2021 quarterfinals; 1 FBS bowl at UNT: 2024 First Responder Bowl).
Coach of the Year Honors: Candidate for 2025 AAC Coach of the Year (as of Oct. 2025); no formal wins yet, but recognized for UNT's turnaround.

Offensive Rankings: Consistently top-10 nationally under his schemes (e.g., 2023 UNT: No. 6 total offense; 2022 WSU: No. 14 scoring). UNT led AAC in total offense all three seasons.
Personal: All-South Plains Super Team Offensive POY as HS senior (2003); played WR/QB at Texas Tech (2005–08: 118 rec, 1,409 yds, 9 TDs). Father of Chandler Morris (UNT QB 2023). Salary: ~$950K base (2025), up to $1.5M with incentives.

He is a good coach and should be on our radar.

But given the people in charge of selecting a coach...I doubt it.
