to the Rams for James Pearce, Jr. That pick is currently sitting at #9, and it’s the kind of trade that can set a franchise back a decade. Every NFL GM should have ‘never trade the first round pick’ tattooed on their palm. It almost never works.

Didn't the rams go 2-3 years in a row with no 1st?

The Stafford trade I think. It’s an outlier for sure. Franchise qb stuck on a bad team. Pearce’s statline is not encouraging, 5 tackles, 1.5 sacks.

Rams also traded several firsts for Ramsey I believe. Think they traded like 4-5 in all.

They have a great system of middle round drafting though.

As drafting becomes more program based and the GMs keep getting younger I think you’re going to see way more firsts traded for established, proven players.

Julio Jones seemed to work out for the Falcons

For every Julio there’s at least 5 Marcus Davenports. Could work, but odds are definitely stacked against you. For instance, I think the Jags are going to ultimately regret the Travis Hunter trade. 2 way player sure, but pedestrian stats on both sides of the ball.

Sounds like the theme should be, if you are going to trade a future 1st round pick make sure you don't draft an overrated player

Yeah but the NFL will give them three 2nd rounders to make up for Donald retiring, amd to thank them for hiring minority janitors

Pearce and Jalon Walker are going to be a problem for years to come though

I doubt they end up picking in the top 10 but if they do it’s bad for us bc it likely means Raheem Morris will be fired

Outside of the QB position, this is where playoff teams are built. You can’t miss on your first round pick, but the best teams find 2-3 every day starters on Day 3 and sometimes get an All Pro like the Rams did with Nacua.

They went years with no picks in the first couple rounds.

And still managed to draft a 100x better than Loomis lol

It helps that McVay is maybe the best coach in the league.

No different than QBs, some players are going to be stars or busts just based on their own abilities and mindsets, but there’s a bunch of guys in the middle who if they go to a good team with coaches who know how to use them and actually coach them up they’re going to be much better.

Trading a 1st means that you are trading for someone who is expensive. Successful teams are built through the draft because of the affordability of rookie contracts. One of Loomis's gaffs is signing older players, while failing to succeed on draft day.

The Saints need to cut dead weight, trade back to get more picks, and build around the two young QBs. D and OL are back as the path to a championship.

OP, are you saying James Pearce was a bust? Or saying that he didn't warrant what is shaping up to be a top 10 pick (that was traded out of)?

one draft pick in the 1st round isn’t going to set the Falcons back. They will probably be a winning team as soon as they rid themselves of Morris.

Also, they didn’t really lose a first. They lost out on a second last year.

The bigger issue for the falcons is the cousins/penix debacle. Penix is barely good enough to be a good pick if you factor in getting to take advantage of the first round qb contract.

They can’t do that because of cousins. Between that and Bryce young wild the saints may have the second best qb situation in the dicision

The real question is would you pick James Pierce with the 6th pick in this draft and CB Will Johnson? This is essentially what they gave up for a guy with obvious concerns going into the draft.
