I'm planning a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton the first or two in June with my two kids - 13 and 11. 4 days in Yellowstone and 3 days in Grand Teton. Are there any downsides to visiting this time of the year? I'm hoping to see wildlife. Will it be overly crowded the first week or two in June?

Yellowstone does not need that many days.

The Four Corners region includes several National Parks, the most prominent being Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. Other national parks nearby include Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Grand Canyon in Utah and Arizona. The region also features several national monuments with significant cultural and geological history, such as Chaco Culture, Hovenweep, Aztec Ruins, and Canyon de Chelly.

The canyons in the Tetons will be holding snow in early June so you may not be able to hike in them but those are the bigger hikes. Everything else will be open. You have kids in school so you have to play by their schedule, June will be crowded but not like July and August.

Early June is still early for summer OP, you can look at historical weather and it could be nice but you could still have snow. That’s technically still their ‘mud’ thaw season. To give you an example most of the fishing guides say to wait until the end of June as the snow is still melting in early June so the rivers/ creeks are high and dirty generally still.

That’s a good amount of time, I’d suggest 2-3 days in Yellowstone and the rest Jackson Hole/ GTNP though.

It’s a fantastic vacation with kids. Bring binoculars. I’ve never been that early I’ve only been in late summer/ fall and winter.

ETA: look up what’s open. If I remember right some things don’t open for summer until some point at mid june. Also plan for it to be cold, like it could easily snow cold.

- Grand Canyon
- Lake
- Old Faithful/Norris/Grand Prismatic

We did this trip a few years ago with kids a similar age. It is a perfect time to go. I will look back at my notes to give some more info, but you definitely will fill all 4 days in Yellowstone. If you can stay in the park this is a huge benefit. It will be crowded but find some spots off the beaten path and it will seem like you are the only one there. At any rate- start your days EARLY before the crowds roll in.

Teton NP is great too, take the boat across Jenny Lake and hike to Inspiration Point. Then eat some pizza and beer on the roof at Dornan's after.

Jackson is a great town, but you can pretty much see it in a day. That time of year the Snake River will be flowing fast so if you can book a rafting trip I would highly recommend it. We did a half day trip with Dave Hansen and loved it.

Early June depends on activities you want to do. If big hikes are on the agenda you will most likely hit snow above 7500’. Rivers will be flowing so rafting could be fun if rapids are desired. 4 days just for Yellowstone maybe a day too much but you could day trip to Bozeman for museum of the Rockies or west Yellowstone grizzly encounter. Also big sky and taking the lift to top of loan peak

In 2007 we were there for a couple of days during the week leading up to Memorial Day. The crowd was definitely less than than what you see in pictures/video of peak time, but certain places there were still a good many folks. The northeast entrance and Dunraven Pass were closed due to snow that hadn't been cleared yet, but other than that everything in both Yellowstone and Grand Teton that we wanted to see was accessible. We also saw elk, moose, eagles, and of course lots of bison.

While we were in the parks the weather was nice. Sunny, cool but not cold. The night after we left to drive on to Missoula, the area got a pretty good snowfall.

tldr; crowds should be smaller but not gone. Weather in that part of the country is very unpredictable.

We did a float trip and a fly trip. Fly trip was our favorite.

This was the best part of our trip. I could literally hike all day and sit at Dornan’s ever day for the rest of my life.

Lamar Valley

You can easily spend an entire day here just watching wildlife. Hayden Valley has a lot of wildlife also.

I hope you’re planning on moving around as far as your lodging goes. Jackson Hole, West Yellowstone, & Gardiner are good spots. Cooke City is ideal for visiting Lamar Valley, but there aren’t a lot of options as far as lodging.
