New Version of Siri to 'Lean' on Google Gemini

Apple is reportedly paying Google to build a custom Gemini-based model that runs on its Private Cloud Compute servers to power Siri. Apple plans to roll out the revamped Siri around March next year, possibly with an AI-powered web search feature.

Great news. Tim Cook has been embarrassing Apple for a decade with Siri.

It really is. Apple basically has no AI investment it seems.

I would have thought by now they would be selling televisions and cars. They can’t even figure out how to do text prediction and are now asking for googles help.

They're a hardware manufacturer and haven't innovated in the actual field of tech (outside of hardware) in some time.

Even then, their last major hardware development (the M chip series) was quickly copied and surpassed in a couple of years.

They need to just bite the bullet and become a total consumer-facing hardware and content company and buy Disney

It should buy blackberry s patent for text prediction. BBs was far superior to Android. Not just predictive but always learning and adapting to your typing.

I'm surprised they didn't go with OpenAI, they have been integrating them more into iOS.

a. They have a long-lasting relationship with Google and Google is one of their biggest revenue streams annually

b. OpenAI may not exist in its current form if Elon's lawsuit wins. Google is under much less threat to have its AI attacked. Even if the antitrust stuff hurts Alphabet, forcing a split with Gemini, Apple will be dealing with the same platform/people.

Ha, this made me laugh. Yea, google with their pixel series of phones, watches and bluetooth in ear version of "airpods".
It's almost like they are copying the walled garden apple created... no, couldn't be...

The problem is it's not "walled" like Apple's ecosystem.

Google (along with plenty of others) has created interconnectivity, but it's typically not exclusive or controlled like Apple's offerings.

Eh I dunno, give Google time and I don't see it being any different. Their biggest issue is no one really in the Android world really wants to go down the pixel watch / pixel buds route.

Anyhow, I kinda like Gemini as an AI app / LLM, however, I don't really trust google. Not sure how much I'd trust it with the Apple guardrails but *maybe* it'll be the best of both worlds? Dunno.
Apple seems like they lost ALL of their AI/siri talent over the last decade so they have no innovators/developers left for this effort. Hence the forfeit.

You Android guys never cease to amaze me how gullible you all are while at the same time non stop bashing Apple users.

first elon makes apple quit the dream of an iPhone car, then they whiff on AI

its ok, neither of those 2 emerging technologies are a big deal; hey -- spaceship donut campus!

eta if Jobs was alive, do you think he would have spiked the EV project or missed the boat entirely on AI?

What chips have surpassed the M chips? Snapdragon is only better at multi-core performance. It doesn't surpass it in power efficiency, graphics, single core performance and AI.

If you're comparing them to Intel and AMD, it's x86-64 vs ARM. Intel and AMD need way more power and are a completely different architecture.

Honestly, Apple's wait and see has them so far behind companies like Facebook, OpenAI, Elon, and Google with AI. They have so far to catch up with datacenters to even be remotely competitive. It makes sense to partner..

I find it funny Elon is busy pissing off Memphis running way more shitty generators than he said he would to power his AI data centers.

I think Jobs would have pushed them somewhere new. He failed a lot on some of his projects, but he wasn't scared to do something big like Apple seems to do now. They go for safe choices.

From a business perspective, it makes sense to partner with google on the AI development. They’ve effectively lost the battle on AI. Wave the flag and package the product so it’s well integrated with apple.

They can still work on luring talent. With all the money they have I can’t believe they couldn’t convince people to jump on board.

Guess Google pays well.

In any case, I’m glad iPhone users will finally have decent AI software. Siri is a complete joke.

I enabled ChatGPT on Siri, it works fine. I mostly use ChatGPT directly through the app since I pay for it. Grok is ok, but I have had better results for my needs with ChatGPT. I've not had anywhere close to as a good of results with Google's stuff.
