After The Brian Kelly Experiment, how important is it that the next Coach is "One of Us"?

Coach O (who even talked like us) won a National Championship at LSU and led the Tigers to their best season ever before catching a bit of Destin-itis.

Hell even, ULL is lucky to have Head Coach Michael Desormeaux that is an Alum and took them to a Sun Belt Championship Game last year!

Let's use this thread to make a list of Head Coach candidates that would check the "One of Us" box:

Kelvin Sheppard (Lions Defensive Coordinator) who played at LSU. He brings the energy that the program needs.

Corey Raymond (LSU DB Coach) was the Assistant Head Coach at Florida previously. He's ready for his opportunity.

Kelvin Shepard would be my pick, assuming we get a competent OC like Tim Rattay

fricking zero. I don’t understand the obsession with where a coach is from.

If they can coach and win titles I don’t give a shite if they’re from North Korea.

That “one of us” thing is so dumb… do you really think Saban was one of us when he was hired??? No. Do you really think Les goober Miles was one of us?? No. The team respected them and we respected the wins and product on the field. The only one who was “one of us” was O and I’ll forever be grateful for what he gave us but it didn’t really work did it?? Work hard and act like you care that you’re the coach of a historic and successful program and We’ll like you too

Literally not important at all.

Just win. Orgeron was a terrible coach who won a national title because of a coach from Florida (Brady) California (Aranda) and Nebraska (Busch).

His assistants were otherwise from Colorado, Illinois, Alabama, and then had two LA guys in Joseph and Johnson.

What’s more important is someone who knows how to win football games. Period.

Who cares if they’re one of us - as long as they get us, respect us and incorporate who we are into how they run the program?

We’re a unique and proud culture.
Find a way to make it work into what you’re doing as a winning program and you’re set for life…

If by " One of us" you mean " from South Louisiana" then that limits you too much. Even that doesn't help you particularly in North Louisiana. How many Cajun national championship caliber college football coaches do you suppose there are?

Someone who understands the Southern United States would be preferable however.

Nick Saban
Skip Bertman
Jay Johnson
and most of the other successful LSU coaches were not “one of us.” That shite is so overblown. Just win.

I would prefer a coach from the southeast, but it’s not a prerequisite. Guys not from here, but from areas similar in culture can work out. Also, coaches from other areas who have spent time coaching in the southeast can often work out fine. BK is probably not even liked in New England. Some guys are just unlikable.

"One of us" means embracing the things that make Louisiana special, not being "from here" or "talking like us" or whatever. Saban did it, Miles did it, Orgeron didn't have to choose it because he was born into it. Kelly didn't do it. Simple as

I don't believe in a "one of us" culture. Culture should be about a winning attitude. An attitude of accountability, integrity and each individual being bought into what is best for the team.

Who can find those traits? Who can instill them? I don't know who will be available to LSU, but if they can find "that guy", I'll take him. Saban wasn't "one of us". Bertman wasn't one of us. Jay Johnson didn't come here as one of us. But they're all winners and people who want to win will want to play for a coach who is not just committed in mind, but in heart, to win, and who has the discipline to do what is necessary. Discipline means being willing to go against yourself when the evidence tells you to change, and not getting bogged down in old habits. And yes, it also means not making a mockery of yourself like Orgeron did after winning it all. He had no focus once he reached the top.

Anyone that comes in and wins will be “one of us”. Winning cures a lot.

After the Nick Saban experiment I’d say it’s not important at all.
