About a month ago, I had a new assistant start. She's 27, bright and a good worker. We have not had many non-work conversations, but she told me today that her roommate made the news over the weekend.

Her roommate did an interview at the Jackson No Kings protest. She sounded uninformed and unintelligent. My assistant basically said so. The roommate is a militant lesbian feminist. My assistant told me she is looking for a new place - that the reason she lived with this girl (and two other leftists) was to save money.

Now that she has a more solid job, she's looking to move to an apartment of her own. She's conservative - wants to meet someone and settle down (has a good dating relationship now), but tells me that a lot of people her age have just been decimated by the economy and socialism looks like a better option. She asked me to help her set up her 401k match and I told her a general overview of how all that works.

Maybe there is hope, but I now think getting prices down has to be a top pirority for the administration.

Prices rarely, or never, really go down. The best that can happen is raising incomes so the prices don’t hurt so much. And getting interest rates down.

The government is shut down because the other side wants to keep spending money they don’t have, which is only going to continue or worsen inflation. This is the pickle we as Americans are in. The administration can only do so much. We need a few generations of administrations to correct it.

It really is a legitimate problem

Kids in high school, college age, kids and young people in their 20s and 30s believe that society should give them a comfortable life, not that they should have to work for it not that they should have to earn it overtime, but that society should give it to them

It almost seems that a time in the future is inevitable or socialism is tried, and then fails, causing a great reset

Seems unfathomable but one day all these young people will be in charge of everything

Get what prices down?

Gasoline? Housing? Insurance? Beef? Rice? Toilet paper?

And how?

Unfortunately the problem is the currency debasement. When we increase the money supply and increase inflation our purchasing power goes down. All the money that was printed out of thin air the last 5 years is the problem. We can pretend that prices are rising if we want to, but the value of the dollar is actually the thing that went down. If young people think that the prices were raised on them by greedy corporations then it would be quite easy for them to think they desire socialism. Our currency is a ponzi scheme, especially since 1971 when we went off the gold standard. The reason that gold and bitcoin has been going up is because people are buying the hell out of it for this very reason.

It's not just, "the other side."

The current administration recently passed a huge spending bill to continue spending even more money that we don't have and to increase debt. Conservatives opposed it and were vilified by the administration and even people on this forum called to primary them and for physical violence against them. More, bigger deficit spending and increased debt is, "big," and, "beautiful," to both the Democrats and the current administration.

Downvote away.

True. Comparing prices in October of 2025 to October of 2019, I think overall general inflation is up 30-40%. The only item I can think of that has returned somewhat in the range of cost prior to the Covid-19 Hysteria is gasoline. Here in Platte County MO a gallon of gas is $2.62/gallon, in October of 2019 it was around $2.38/gallon.

This has been an indoctrination over the past 40-50 yrs while our "conservative" reps sat around, allowed it to happen, & didn't fight for us.

We've gotten almost zero representation for as long & continued to be taxed more & more. And it all has been intentional.

Which also causes the prices to go up.

The only solution is to get rid of the federal reserve, outlaw fractional reserve banking and implement an honest monetary system.

But the deep state stands in the way because they will do anything to keep the transfer of wealth going.

Unfortunately you are correct. No politician is going to cut the things that are needed to be cut. He knows he would not get many in congress to support him, because they all know they would be voted out and likely stoned to death. Trump was never going to cut SS or Medicare programs (over half of the annul spending). His only shot is to run the economy hot hoping the advancements in AI can lead to a booming economy to outpace the spending. It's a long shot.

I remember gas being > $3.00/gallon during BHO administration so gas is "cheap"
It's beef that I cannot figure out. MBH told me that our USDA culled millions of head the latter part of the Biden Administration for wasting disease. True? Or has the cost of raising cattle sky-rocketed? At some point is it not more profitable to grow corn for cattle vs. cars?

My guess is a lot of small to mid size beef producers are not in the biz anymore.

From Google AI.......

quote:

The total number of U.S. beef cattle peaked at 94.7 million in 2019, but by January 2025, the total herd had decreased to 86.7 million head, an 8% drop. The number of beef cows alone was 31.691 million in 2019 and fell to 27.86 million by January 1, 2025.

Oh I get that. That’s why I mentioned generations of administrations needed to correct it.

My main point was that republicans were willing to give some and democrats aren’t. And the difference in desired spending is quite different both in terms of scale and priorities.

In our economic system, prices legitimately going down almost always means that something really bad is happening. Prices sure went down in 2008, for example. Similarly, gasoline got close to $0.60 in the early / mid-1980s and it destroyed whole neighborhoods in New Orleans. I mean, there was very real human suffering that resulted from those "awesome gas prices" and it was right in front of those of us who were around.
