NASA unhappy with SpaceX's progress, will open moon lander contract to other companies

Shows how frustrated they are with Starship being so far behind schedule.
Starship did have a pretty good test flight last week but it still wasn't orbital and its moon lander plans are complicated, requiring 12-20 flights to low earth orbit to refuel the Starship that will make the trip to the moon.
The next Artemis program milestone is planned for next spring, which will send astronauts around the moon on the giant NASA rocket. After that NASA needs a lander for 2028 or 29.
NASA head Sean Duffy said on CNBC that he is opening contracts up to other companies and mentioned Blue Origin, who already has a secondary contract. Their goal is a lander by 2030 but maybe that can be sped up with more money...or not.
The fear is that the Chinese will beat us back to the moon but it is an apples and oranges thing because our plans are to build a human presence on the moon not just send people once.
Too bad Stoke Space isn't ready to compete yet because those motherfrickers would absolutely get it done.

It seems like only SpaceX and Blue Origin are in the running so this is an attempt to light a fire under SpaceX and provide more money to Blue Origin in hopes that one will get it done.
Trump really does not want the Chinese to beat us during his term.
As for SpaceX, they have accomplished an amazing amount with their more traditional rockets but Starship is more of Elon's vision.
A big problem with the Starship program is that they're trying to do everything with one rocket...land on the moon, go to Mars, transport giant cargo quickly across the earth. How well it does any one thing is yet to be determined.

NASA being "frustrated" about a company they had to contract their entire purpose to, because they were too incompetent to do it themselves.

It kinda apples and oranges as one's primary mission is exploration and research and the other is so far geared towards space transport of people and material
The Osiris mission in 2022 that landed on the Bennu asteroid, collected samples and returned back to earth was pretty awesome. The launch of the James Webb in 2021 and the discoveries its provided since then have also been quite impressive.
Space X well they revolutionized ways to get people and material into orbit at relatively low cost , but Starship and the plans for the lunar landing system have been ..well its slow going and year after year they keep missing planned achievement miles stones.

why cant we just give the plans from the last 6 times we landed to spacex and have them be ready to go just to land within a year or 2?

As mentioned this is basically apples and oranges but the JWST goes a long way to covering everything SpaceX has actually done by itself.

Do it themselves? NASA directs the programs but has always relied upon private industry to build their space craft.
The Saturn 5 were mainly built by 5 different contractors.
Boeing: Built the S-IC first stage.
North American Aviation: Built the S-II second stage.
Douglas Aircraft Company: Built the S-IVB third stage.
IBM and Bendix Corporation: Built the instrument unit for the guidance system.
The space shuttle:
Overall management: The program was managed by NASA.
Orbiter: Rockwell International was the prime contractor responsible for building the Space Shuttle orbiter, including the Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour.
Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs): Thiokol, which later became ATK, manufactured the solid rocket boosters.
Main Engines: Aerojet Rocketdyne (originally Rocketdyne) was responsible for the powerful main engines used on the shuttle's main tank.
External Tanks (ETs): Lockheed Martin produced the external tanks.
Prime Contractor: The United Space Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, was the prime contractor for operating the program.

If you compare the R&D of the Starship vs the Saturn V its pretty amazing. If SpaceX had the funding of Space Race NASA we would have a Mars base by now.

Artemis is a waste of money political gift to all involved. If NASA were serious they would scrap the whole thing and ask SpaceX to move faster with more $$$.
