The 70-mile tunnel would be built under the Bering Strait and unlock joint exploration of natural resources, a Kremlin envoy has suggested. Kirill Dmitriev - Putin's investment envoy and CEO of Russia's RDIF sovereign wealth fund - said the project would be funded by Moscow and "international partners", costing $8bn (£5.9bn). The proposal suggests using The Boring Company, a US tunnel construction company owned by Elon Musk, to built the bridge in under eight years.
Dmitriev said the tunnel would typically cost upwards of $65bn (£48.5bn) but the technology from Musk's firm's could bring the cost down to $8bn. He introduced the tunnel idea late on Thursday after Putin and Donald Trump spoke in a phone call - with the Russian President agreeing to meet in Budapest for talks on securing peace in Ukraine.
"The dream of a US-Russia link via the Bering Strait reflects an enduring vision - from the 1904 Siberia-Alaska railway to Russia’s 2007 plan. RDIF has studied existing proposals, including the US-Canada-Russia-China railroad, and will support the most viable," Dmitriev wrote on X.
The Bering Strait is 51mi (82km) wide at its narrowest point and separates Russia's Chukotka region from Alaska. There have been talks to connect the two points for at least 150 years, with a number of projects proposed but never implemented. Dmitriev wrote to Musk on X: "Imagine connecting the US and Russia, the Americas and the Afro-Eurasia with the Putin-Trump Tunnel - a 70-mile link symbolizing unity."
He added that a similar idea - the construction of a 'Kennedy-Khrushchev World Peace Bridge' - was proposed during the Cold War and shared a sketch highlighting the route it may have taken between Chukotka and Alaska.

Pretty cool... and if it makes Z squirm, all the better.

Pretty cool, I think. Can someone who knows explain in more detail what benefits this would have, beyond the important symbolism?

Elon's Boring Company could do it.

Roger is about to be swimming in it. Maybe that'll loosen him up a bit.

Taking a train from Alaska all the way across Russia to Moscow would be an unbelievable trip.

Talk about a project to nowhere. There isn’t a road or railroad within a thousand miles in either country.

The ultimate bridge to nowhere that would be

No way I would drive through a 70 mile tunnel. If you are not claustrophobic when you start, you will be by the end of it.

Either way, I like that they are thinking of shite like this. Better than lobbing threats of sanctions and world ending war back and forth.

None really. There is nothing on either continent for an enormous distance. Plus the Bering strait is a pretty treacherous place to try and build or maintain a bridge or tunnel.
Perhaps it would just be rail for resource transfers but even then, both countries would have to make huge investments to connect a tunnel to anything else, because there is absolutely nothing in western Alaska or Kamchatka.

Yet people once crossed it without any roads or modern infrastructure. Their are ancestors of them who live around there still

Interesting. So 70 miles of rail would be nore like 700 miles of rail in order to be practical.
frick it, let's do it. What's 8bn for at least some temporary world peace?

You are thinking about it as it is now.
This would spur growth in a region of Russia that has vast resources, but Russia can't develop on their own. Those resources will end up being developed by the US or China. This could be a wedge between China and Russia. Trump needs to push this hard.

The idea of being able to travel to Asia without a flight amazes me.

I’m sure it would spur development at the tunnel/bridge location on each country

Wow, you should write them and tell them what you have discovered.
Of course them "mentioning" it means it is going full speed ahead with no feasibility studies or anything. Nobody has a way to obtain your knowledge. Tell them!
