AP Poll / SEC Bias - Dogs LSU

Associated Press Poll Once Again Biased In One Specific Direction
LSU enters the week ranked No. 10, just one spot behind their preseason ranking. Sounds reasonable, until you look at how the Tigers got there. They opened the season by beating the Clemson Tigers on the road, which at the time looked like a meaningful win over a top-5 opponent.
But Clemson has fallen off a cliff, starting 3-3 with losses to Georgia Tech and Syracuse. As is so often the case, however, poll voters never updated their rankings to move LSU down after learning Clemson was never deserving of their preseason ranking. Their other "big" win came over the Florida Gators. While Florida's not a bottom-tier team by any means, they're 2-4, including a loss to USF.
The other difficult game LSU played? They lost. They're still No. 10, a spot that would not be possible were they not in the SEC. And we know this to be the case, because we can compare them to other teams.
USC, for example, has one loss. On the road, to a team ranked No. 17 at the time. That team, Illinois, has two losses. Those two losses are to the best two teams in college football, Ohio State and Indiana. USC has a dominant win over Michigan on its resume. But because USC started lower than LSU in the preseason, and doesn't get the perceived benefit of the SEC's "quality loss" formula, they sit 10 spots behind the Tigers at No. 20.

What and how you value, in terms of on field results, can change your perception of rankings. But even looking at objective data, based on opponent-adjusted efficiency, the SEC is being given undue credit because of its brand names. ESPN's Bill Connelly, creator of the SP+ metric, posted this week' SP+ ranking of teams based on their actual performance this season, with preseason expectations removed.
Lo and behold, four of the top-5 teams are in the Big 10. And the best team thus far? The Texas Tech Red Raiders. LSU? They're No. 22. Georgia? No 21. Alabama? No. 26.

Again, these are opponent adjusted. It already includes an effective measurement of strength of schedule. Notice too, that the Washington Huskies are No. 12, 10 spots higher than LSU in on-field performance. Yet they're unranked in the AP Poll, while the Tigers are #10. What's the result of this discrepancy? As always, SEC boosters are using AP Poll rankings to talk up their strength of schedule and the supposed difficulty of the SEC gauntlet.
Does the objective data mean that the SEC is a cakewalk and none of the conference's teams are deserving of being ranked highly? Of course not. It does, however, show that SEC teams are added to the AP Poll when they don't necessarily deserve it.
But the talking points are out; the SEC has the hardest remaining schedule because of AP-ranked teams. Except, once again, looking at data-driven rankings, the remaining strength of schedule is remarkably similar between conferences.
quote:
Six of the 11 hardest remaining schedules are in the Big Ten, per ESPN's FPI metric. The other five are in the SEC. Nine of the top 18 toughest remaining schedules are in the Big Ten. 10 of the top 18 are in the SEC. It's very evenly matched. Yet it won't be presented that way, because of biased human voters that don't watch the games.
As one quick example, an AP voter had Michigan No. 17 and USC unranked in this week's poll. Even though USC just beat Michigan, handily, at the Coliseum on Saturday. Why? Because they likely didn't watch the game and forgot to update it before Sunday morning's deadline. With an expanded playoff, this matters more than ever. And it's in the hands of people who aren't even paying attention.

The way people talk about Clemson, you would’ve thought we lost to them.
All year it’s “well that Clemson game hasn’t aged great”
We won the game right? And yet their shitty record is somehow being held against us like we didn’t get it done.

I imagine this guy would rank 2-loss Notre Dame in the top 5.

I can’t believe I read that much of the article. They’re comparing us to USC? Who got beat by 2 loss Illinois, one of which was an absolute middle school beat down to Illinois and their best win is a team that already got beat by OK and has no signature win. Meanwhile, we’ve beat teams like UF that took Texas to the woodshed and our lone loss was a one score game, on the road, to an undefeated team.
The comp is laughable.

As a fan, I would be fine if LSU wasn't in the top 20. Reality is, as of now, we are more 22-25. We got manhandled by an OM team that is gong to lose 3, maybe four games. We do not currently have a big win.
Now, we beat Vandy and aTm, then yes, put us in the top 15.
However, anyone with a brain can see we have a bottom tier QB and Oline along with a mid, at best, OC.
Our QB is good for 7-8 dumb decisions a game that usually turn into 2-3 turnovers. These decisions by a 5th year senior are going to lose a more games. Our defense can only carry us for so long.
Downvote away.
Now if Nuss proves in the next three games he can make better decisions, move around in the pocket, and not throw into triple coverage several times a game, then it will all take care of itself.

So USC lost to a two-loss team and LSU lost to an undefeated team? The team USC lost to also lost by 53 points to a team, which this person conveniently left out.
LSU has already beaten 3 preseason top-15 teams. Sure you can argue Clemson, Florida and South Carolina were overrated, but they're still talented teams. USC has beaten Michigan, who already lost to an SEC team in Oklahoma.
Lots of bias and flaws in the logic here.

I’d like his explanation on Oregon now.

But hey Miami gets to celebrate the UF win as a strong one.

We are in a strong position
We will be 10-1 with a birth to Atlanta on the line in Norman

I truly hope we beat the breaks off Vanderbilt tired of the disrespect

Can’t wait to for him to tell us how weak Vanderbilt is after LSU wins this week.

Cliffs Notes:
USC alum, who works for FOX talks crap about SEC and tries to prop up the B1G, but mainly USC.
It's real easy to understand. Anyone who works for FOX or some sub-company beholden to FOX is going to push the B1G. Anyone who works for ABC/ESPN or a sub-company beholden to them will push the SEC.

Of all the bullshite in that article, this statement couldn't be further from the truth.

Are they really talking about SEC teams being over ranked when Penn State was #2 just weeks ago?

This is a bad comparison but the guy seems to not realize that things work out in the end. If LSU loses another game they are going to tank pretty far in the rankings because voters see that we haven't looked good.
If USC ends up with 2 losses and LSU 3, then USC will for sure be ranked ahead of us. But if it's both 2 losses a piece, yes, LSU will be ranked ahead at the end because they will have had a much tougher road to those two losses/more quality wins and losses.
It's dumb to compare teams like that when you are cherry picking stats for each team. Just let the season play out and the rankings will work themselves out.
And he's complaining about rankings that literally do not matter. The AP poll is not the comittee.

Voters are ranking us decently right now because the defense is elite. I have no problem with that logic because as soon as the offense has a complete game (and they're bound to do so at some point), we're going to look like the #1 team in the country in whatever game that is and voters are going to look ridiculous having us ranked 20-25 at that point. I actually think the voters are doing a decent job with rankings for the most part this year. No team is dominant this year.

Before the season , I posted that if we didn’t beat Clemson, there was no way we could run the table from there. Some frick tard stated that Clemson was the best team on our schedule! Be highly skeptical of some of the opinions stated in the rant!
