quote:

The Saints are now 1-5, matching their worst six-game start since the dark Ditka days of 1999. They own the worst record in the NFC and can thank the lowly New York Jets for preventing them from having the worst mark in the entire league.

quote:

This season might be a tough one, but it shouldn’t be a lost one. The Saints must use it to enhance their future. If that involves trading away a key player or two to acquire future draft picks, then it needs to be done. Sean Payton taught us there are no sacred cows. He traded Reggie Bush, Jimmy Graham and Darren Sproles in their primes. He dealt away high draft picks Donte Stallworth and Akiem Hicks. The decisions weren't always right, but no one bats 1.000 in this league. His willingness to boldly do what he thought was necessary to improve the team’s future showed us the importance of having vision and a conviction. Trading away stars isn't always popular, especially in a market where players are often treated as family. But tough decisions rarely are. Being right is more important than being popular.

quote:

It’s never easy to part ways with popular stars and locker room leaders, especially Ring of Honor-type players. And there's a human element to consider with families and schools and mortgages, etc. But the reality is the Saints’ future might depend on it. You have to give something to get something, and the Saints’ few tradable assets are players that rank among the most popular on the team: Alvin Kamara, Chris Olave, Demario Davis and Taysom Hill.

The problem is Loomis is batting .100 the last 6-7 years. We should have did what I said this offseason. Do not sign any free agents other than bargain basement guys on one year deals and not resign our own guys.

Get all the cap mess out of the way now, get comp picks. And draft as many young prospects as you can and hopefully hit on some.

He sounds like a fan from Cleveland who just read about the Saints.

Duncan's a tool.

He knew this season was going to be bad, him acting like its a surprise is disingenuous. They blew it up as much as they could last off seasons, they'll trim more fat this off season while building a new culture and roster.

We probably should trade a few players but...

If they believe in Rattler (or Shough), they probably shouldn't trade guys like Olave until the offseason.

He also conveniently forgot that Jimmy was shipped off as a malcontent. Hicks could not figure it out in our system and did not turn into this version until he made it to Chicago.
I do not recall why they parted ways with Stallworth, just searched and saw he was traded before Payton took over and never played under Payton. Traded for Simoneau and a draft pick that became Bushrod.

But when your primary job is to report on local sports teams, I guess it's asking too much to know the nuances of the subject of the main team you cover

Anyone that has a young successor on the roster already should be traded. IMO, this is the list of guys that we should trade if an offer is presented to us (keeping Kamra off this list, as well as Cam since we have no one to replace him).:

1. Olave
2. Shaeed
3. Ruiz
4. Johnson
5. Hill
6. Granderson
7. Werner
8. Davis
9. Reid
10. Godchaux
11. Shepherd
12. Yiadom

Now most of these guys have limited trade value, but I believe it is worth getting rid of most of them to open up playing time for young guys. I am fine keeping Hill and DD, mostly for the fan in me, but also because they are not signed next year.

What could they realistically get for those players? Anyone who watches 5 minutes can see Olave has almost as many negatives as positives as a player, and the other 3 are far on the downside of their careers.

If you told me trading Taysom or Kamara would get you a 2nd and and 3rd, then do it. If it's just going to get a 6th or something, just let their contracts expire naturally and move on

Cam and Demario are old as frick. Trading them would bring nothing back and especially in the case of Cam we don't even have a young guy to step up in his role. Trading Olave is the only must.

The Saints didn’t trade Bush or Sproles. Their contracts ended & we let them walk.

Bush got traded to Miami and Sproles to Philly.

Maybe calm down and get YOUR facts right.

Sproles to philly

Bush traded to Miami

Demario is rated at 82.1 on pff (13 of 137). He's also 13th in tackles among lbs. He's having a great season

If a contender has injuries then sometimes you can get more mid season than in the off season. Certainly some one like Kamara would get more midseason from someone needing a RB to help down the stretch

Many Saints fans are currently too apathetic to read that article.
