quote:

The unnamed 60-year-old Missouri resident was staying at the popular Sam’s Throne campground in north-central Arkansas when his family called authorities on October 2 to report that they had not heard from him in several days. When a sheriff’s deputy arrived at the camper’s empty site, they noticed “evidence of a struggle and injury” and drag marks leading into the woods, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The camper’s body was several yards outside of the site, and “had extensive injuries consistent with those expected from a large carnivore attack.”

quote:

The incident is the second bear fatality in Arkansas this fall after more than 130 years without one. In September, 72-year-old former National Park Service ranger Vernon Patton was using a tractor to move gravel on his property when a bear attacked him, causing extensive injuries. Patton died in the hospital 11 days later.

quote:

At the time, the death was the first known fatal bear attack in the state since 1892.

People underestimate black bears which are, generally, not a threat.

They repopulated all the black bears in North Louisiana which are not suppose to be dangerous but something is going to happen.

Let some hunter get between a momma and her cubs walking with a flashlight before or after dark.

There's already too many of them

Campers up here do zero preparation for bears. Couple that with the population/popularity increase of the ozarks and a bear numbers climbing towards 8,000 I'm surprised it took this long

This. Even the most basic shite. I'm surprised there haven't been more with the amount of food that people keep in tents

Did they reintroduce bears to AR?

I remember thinking about going hiking up there not too many years ago so I looked up information about bears in the state and remember seeing results to the effect that they had been hunted to extinction 100 years before.

Yes, Arkansas Game and Fish brought nuisance bears down from Minnesota and Manitoba for a 10 year period in the 1950s-60s.

This is a good Clay Newcomb article about it when he was a magazine publisher

Probably a combination of a well intentioned if not well thought out management plan involving restocking of an indigenous species coupled with an increase in human population placing the two, bears and people, in close contact more often and nature doing what nature does. That or the bears have been impacted by jet contrails and have become more aggressive and have developed a taste for human flesh as a problematic ancillary issue resulting from jet contrails....

Likely a bear that ate from the campground garbage can.

My wife and I spent a long weekend in a cabin near pigeon forge a couple of months ago to get away from the heat (no comment on it being hot because any such comment will drive some here insane). We were having some drinks at a local bar and the waitress asked us if we heard about the couple who had a bear get in their cabin the day before. Broad daylight. We had not and I assumed it was just a rumor. Heard it from several people that day and sure as hell the couple had posted a video of the bear in the cabin. They were holed up in the loft and the bear was in the kitchen eating all their little debbies and what not.

Stupid arse Game and Fish have been putting bears and Mountain lions all over the state for years (after they were largely wiped out due to this very reason), and the chickens have finally come home to roost.

The victims families should sue the living shite out of AGFC for doing this.

So they shipped in the a-hole Yankee bears from up north?

Definitely something weird going on. I know it happens everywhere with bear hunting, but a lot of speculation that baiting by hunters may be acclimating the bears too much to human food.

The first attack was the most bizarre as it was out of the blue to a guy who was just underneath a tractor working on it on the side of a gravel road. The second attacks was more obvious as it was a camper who was rumored to have been feeding the bear over a number of days. Also a couple of campers near the first attack had to fend off an aggressive bear all night.

But yeah: I’ve always run Bear bags and taken precautions when out West camping but never sweated it in Arkansas. That’s changing as of now.

I’m covered up with them on my property in St Landry Parish right now too.
Wish they’d restocked turkeys instead

You gotta keep your chin tucked and punch them in the nose. You can choke one out just like a human.

I was In cades cove and severville about ten years ago and we saw numerous bears and people who just walked right by them and even somewhat chased them trying to get close ups on their phones, I’m talking 25yd and less.
It was crazy to think how bad a 200-250pound coon would frick them up.
We were standing watching a sow with cubs feeding about 150yd out in cades cove and they started walking towards us to about 100yd then veered off. When we got in the car my wife asked my daughter if she was scared and she said “no cus we I put my arm around dad I was checking to make sure he was carrying his gun”

I remember one story about bears in the 80’s. Couple of bears walked out of a sugar can patch in St Mary parish during cutting. Besides that, never heard about them.

Now there are bear sightings at Sharp Road (BR), Vida of them walking through beach towns.

What brought the population growth OR have they always been there and social media brings it to light?
