Didn’t Skip Holtz take away his play calling duties at LA Tech after 6 games?? What made BK think the dude was qualified to be the OC here one year let alone 2.

You can’t tell me there’s not a young brash offensive mind at a Big 12 school somewhere that wouldn’t crawl on broken glass all the way to BR for 1 mil a year.

Thats just incompetence and laziness.

So you jeopardize the whole program for one possible recruit!
BK is clueless. ND fans continue to laugh.

He was the QB coach on a team whose QB (Daniels) had a remarkable year. Following that season, there was likely a market elsewhere for him to be an OC due to Daniels' performance. Sloan was also the primary recruiter for Underwood.

BK didn't want to lose Sloan following the 2023 season. Particularly to keep Underwood in the fold. However, Sloan probably had OC offers/interest from other programs (again, due to Daniels' remarkable season). To keep Sloan on the staff BK wanted to give him the co-OC title. That pissed off Denbrock, which caused him to leave for ND. At that point BK could either name Sloan (and Hankins who just had two 1st round WRs) as co-OC to keep him on staff; or hire a new OC and likely lose Sloan, and possibly Underwood, as a result.

He chose to keep Sloan by promoting him, and (at the time) Underwood. In hindsight that was the wrong decision given Underwood didn't come to LSU and Sloan's poor offense is the anchor that (likely) will foil a potential CFP run. I'm sure BK has learned a valuable lesson...coaches and relationships don't matter all that much anymore when it comes to recruiting blue chip players. Money does.

This is all truth - however, I do think that Denbrock was probably leaving anyway. But all of the other reasons that you pointed out are definitely reasons - Underwood, QB coach for Daniels for 2 years, other offers, etc

My guess is Kelly likes him as a person and he will kind of do what kelly wants.

Imo Kelly doesn't want a brash oc with swag to come in and take over. And that's exactly what is needed.

Yep. And he should have demoted/replaced him after he didn't deliver Underwood and had a bad season as OC in 2024.

BK likes to waste seasons with his crappy hires, he sure did with House and the D who wasted JD.

LSU exceeded the offer to Denbrock that A&M offered . However, the new deal couldn't make official until the next LSU Board meeting which was in spring. Notre Dame took advantage of this timing and offered Denbrock when they needed an OC.

Easy decison for Denbrock, who wanted to be closer to his roots.

This.....as soon as Underwood went to Michigan, Kelly should have found someone else. He had to know Sloan was a sub-par OC, but for whatever reason, he's keeping the guy around. It's fricking baffling.

ETA: In reality, he shouldn't have settled for a sub-par OC for a single recruit anyway, so the rest of what I said sounds even dumber at this point.

To be fair, LSU's offense wasn't awful in 2024 (though there were warning signs of inefficiency). Just like House's defense wasn't awful in 2022. On that basis there was no reason to fire either after their first seasons on the job.

Retaining both wasn't/isn't the issue. It's not recognizing and addressing the weak spots in year 1 so they wouldn't become HUGE issues in year 2. It's also an unwillingness to make significant adjustments early on in year 2 when it was clear there were big problems.

Agreed. I would say hiring him in the first place was the problem.

1. He was the QB coach the same season our QB improved dramatically and won the heisman;
2. He is the best recruiter on the staff. I've got about as good of information as you can possibly have on that. A lot of people will disagree with me on this, but there's a reason LSU has consistently been in the running for the top QBs in each class since he's been here. Underwood left because of money. If Underwood hadn't committed two weeks before he entered the portal, Julian Sayin would be QB1 in Baton Rouge right now.

I would love to demote him and keep him on staff. Just not sure that that's possible.
