In short, my identity was stolen - they tried to open lines of credit and purchase a car. The dealership sniffed them out and reached out to me. A month later discover an apartment was leased and utilities were opened under my name.

What was your experience? I froze everything and it's all been handled but I can't lie, I'm a little terrified these people will come after me after getting evicted.

Any advice? Should I move? Am I overreacting?

I had someone in Arkansas earn wages against my SSN, that's it. But I've been OpSec obsessed since I was a kid, so have been very careful with my info.

My wife had hers stolen. It was crazy listening to her struggle to prove that she was herself when trying to call to close fraudulent accounts. Very frustrating.

Years ago I had mine stolen. People were trying to buy a house in my name somewhere in Indiana. It's a pain to deal with.

No. It's not THAT much of a pain.

Like I say, it sucks, but yes, a little bit. They are already on to their next victim and have forgotten about you.

Worst thing I've had is a bank debit card cloned and charged at a TN gas station.

That was many, many years ago... we don't use debit cards anymore. It eventually got straightened out, the bank was nice about it.

The sucky part is we weren't allowed to know who did it.

Yeah, but they brought it back and left me a donation.

Yes. Lock down your credit now. No lines of credit can be opened up until you unfreeze it. And if you are not anticipating a need for your credit lines it is not that big of deal.

The one positive I’ve found of completely wrecking your own identity is that no one wants to steal it. And if they do, you feel sorry for them

Lock credit down, require verbal password on bank transactions.

Wife had this happen a few years back and the cops (white collar crimes) were absolutely fricking worthless even though I had traced it back to a square brand card reader.

I realized it had happened when they opened an account at an online only bank and I got the info in the mail.

Yes, and it sucks big time. Happened several years ago but short of it was gal in Fla got my wife's info, went on a crazy train spending spree. Was kiting checks all over. This was late 90s. It took a long time to clear it up, had a buddy who coached baseball with me that worked for the FBI. He basically chased this bitch down and brought it to a halt. Took a while to clear up the credit issues.

Thanks. I did all of that. Surprisingly my detective was all over it. Called me daily and resolved it within two weeks

Happened to me last year in BR. Somehow they created a pretty convincing LA driver's license with all of my information on it.

spent about $8K at Best Buy on Apple laptops, opened up a LOC at Zales in the Mall of LA & bought a $5K chain & protection plan, then tried to open up LOC at all kinds of places. Ulta, Jared Jewelers, AT&T accounts, among many other places.

Ended up having to freeze all of my credit & flagged my SSN. Fun times.

Filed a police report with BRPD & it took them over a week to get back with me. During that time I had to play detective all on my own. Went to each place where they did damage & talked to managers, employees, etc. They all described the same person but all said that it was company policy to basically not give me any information. Only the BB general manager was helpful enough to provide a security camera pic of the guy.

Finally got a call back from BRPD detective in the cyber crimes division that was assigned to my case. Guy was a complete a-hole & pretty much conceded the fact that they never catch the people doing this. He was also mad at me for writing a letter to the DA & state police stating that his department was absolutely worthless. He scolded me for writing it to which I responded that he was proving my point of his worthlessness.

I handed BRPD everything they needed on a silver platter & they did nothing with it. Said that they could not access the security footage at the Mall of LA because they did not have the resources nor authority.

My advice.
1. File a police report immediately (but only for documentation purposes - don't expect shite else from them because they are indeed worthless, especially if its with BRPD)
2. Get LifeLock - they were extremely helpful in consolidating & addressing all of the fraudulent charges with the various creditors.
3. Lock & freeze your SSN & all set alerts for all of you own legit personal LOC including your mortgage company.
4. Yes it sucks. But I don't think that the folks that did this to you have any interest in coming after you. All they were interested in was free shite.

Good luck & stay vigilant.

This is what I think logically but the little anxiety that's come from this tells me they're going to show up to my place like the people hunting Mr. and Mrs. Smith

I've had credit card info stolen and used but that was an easy fix. Somebody got my checking account info and was making small paypal purchases for a few weeks before I noticed. That was a pain since it was my bill pay account and I had to set everything back up after closing the account. I've had my credit frozen since 2020 now.
