According to Grok;

quote:

James Franklin's buyout as Penn State's head football coach remains approximately $56 million if terminated without cause, based on his 2021 10-year, $85 million contract extension through 2031.

As of October 4, 2025—midway through the 2025 season—estimates vary slightly due to potential proration of the current year's compensation, ranging from $50 million to $56 million across recent reports.

The buyout is calculated at about $8 million per remaining year (base salary plus a $1 million life insurance loan), with 7 years left entering 2025 ($56 million total).

No contract updates have occurred since late 2024, and the figure aligns with USA TODAY's December 2024 database entry of $56,666,667 just before the season. Recent fan frustration stems from Penn State's 32-21 loss to UCLA today, but the financial barrier keeps Franklin secure.

That's only $34 Million less than Penn State had to payout to Jerry Sandusky's victims for their role in covering up his crimes.

The Penn State Fans are use to paying up to make problems go away.

Given what he turned a blind eye to at Vandy and then wen't to pedo st. I hope he doesn't deserve a dime or psu deserves to pay all of it, I cannot make up my mind.

Agents have AD’s nuts in a vice nationwide. ADs need to band together and just say no.

The key is how much is due upfront. If it’s spread out over a certain number of years, it’s at least doable. If it’s like Mark Stoops, where all the buyout is due within 60 days of termination, then they're screwed.

Heard yesterday it’s 44 million and must be paid in full within 60 days. INSANE.

Mark Stoops' buyout as Kentucky's head football coach is approximately $40.5 million if the university terminates his contract without cause after the 2025 season.

This stems from his 2022 extension, which runs through June 30, 2031, and includes an annual salary of $9 million; the buyout equals 75% of the remaining contract value (roughly six years left post-2025, or $54 million total remaining, prorated to $40.5 million).

The full amount is due as a lump sum within 60-90 days of termination, making it a steep financial hurdle amid Kentucky's 2-3 start and recent 35-14 loss to Georgia on October 4, 2025. Stoops vehemently denied recent rumors that he sought to negotiate an early exit in 2024, calling them "100% false" and affirming his commitment to the program.

Billy Napier's buyout as Florida's head football coach is $19.38 million if the university terminates his contract without cause after the 2025 season.

This is 85% of his remaining $22.8 million in guaranteed compensation through January 2029, stemming from his original seven-year, $51.8 million deal signed in December 2021 (with a 2025 base salary of $7.4 million). Half of the buyout (~$9.7 million) is due within 30 days of termination, with the balance paid in annual installments through 2028 and no offset if he lands another job.

The Most Expensive CFB Coaching Buyouts in 2025.

It doesn't seem like it to me, but I guess that depends on how YOU define market rate?

It's honestly amazing that coach's contracts do not have performance clauses. A coach can mail it in and still get paid tens of millions.

Franklin isn't going anywhere. He's got the program at a similar level than what Paterno did after 86.
