The halfway locked double glass door and what it says about America in 2025

In my area, many, if not most restaurants and business have stopped unlocking one of the doors in the pair like below. For the majority of my life they have both been unlocked most places.
Using the picture above, the right door would be unlocked and the left locked. Which is fine when entering the building, but on exiting you are forced to use the awkward (for an American) left door to leave.
In either situation all customers are being funneled into a single door when (2) are available for more space.
I have a couple of theories why this is happening:
- The business wants to surprise a smash and grab type robber who would run into the locked right door when exiting (2025 crime risk)
or
- It is more difficult to unlock the 2nd door owning to the tabs top and bottom that require a reach and bend down to operate. Employees / businesses are too lazy to do this and figure the customer should just deal with it (2025 poor customer service and work ethic)
Or maybe there is another reason?

A lot of places lock one of those doors, usually the one on the right. Don’t care for that.

Double doors have very limited usefulness and should be installed far less frequently.

I was the manager of a business that had double doors. While one of the doors was considered the main door and had the look of a single door, the second half of it wasn't designed to be a functioning door and used only for situations requiring moving large objects through it.
We had a doorman/greeter on the outside.
One prick insisted we unlock both doors and proceeded to pull the lock down and we told him to leave. We resisted but the butthole called the fire marshal's office that cited some regulation that all doors had to be unlocked.
We ignored it though.

Why were you so adamant on keeping one locked? I've noticed a lot of buildings (grocery stores) now have the entrance going into the left set of doors instead of right, It's irritating. Walk on the right side of the sidewalk, enter through the right side of the doors, drive on the right side of the road. This isn't England, this is 'Merca.

When I worked at Blockbuster, we had a shoplifter one night. He hadn't left the store yet, but one of the employees observed him putting tapes in his jacket.
Luckily a police office just happened to come into the store.
I told him what was going on, and he said "wanna see something funny? Watch this."
He proceeded to lock the double doors completely.
Then, when the shoplifter go close enough, he yelled "Freeze! Police!"
The shoplifter took off, ran into the locked doors, bounced off and fell to the floor. He was rolling on the floor in pain.
The cop looked at me and said "Told you it was gonna be funny."
Surprisingly, the glass in the doors didn't crack or shatter.
Luckily a police office just happened to come into the store.

It’s been happening for years now and I hate it. You get the dumb push on the door that doesn’t budge, then you get to do that little dance with the people trying to come in when you’re on the way out. Stupid and unnecessary. Why have double doors if one will be locked? It always drops the business’ stock a little in my book.

This, along with the injuries sustained, is why stores don't chase thieves anymore. If he had shattered the door there's probably $1000+ of damage for what, $50 of tapes? Plus now that he's in pain on the floor he's going to sue the store for $50k of pain and suffering with Morris Bart.
It's way easier for the store to buy $50 of new tapes and add $1/ea to rentals to cover the cost of shrinkage than defend a Morris Bart type lawsuit each week.

The 3rd option I have seen a handful of times is there is something broken in the mechanism. Latch won't properly unlock, once unlocked it is a PIA to relock, lining up the latch is a PIA... in other words, too cheap for the maintenance repair when there is a perfectly functioning single door right there.

We weren't allowed to confront shoplifters back then either.
One guy I worked with was former Army Airborne. We used to call him Super Trooper, because no matter what inconvenience you were experiencing at the time, it was nothing compared to what he endured in the army.
"Man, its hot outside."
"Hot? What do you know about hot? Try lying in a ditch in Grenada not knowing if you'll see the next sunrise. That's hot."
Anyway, one time he caught a shoplifter, chased him out the store, and gave the guy some sort of flying ninja kick which pushed the shoplifter into a car and knocked him out.
He was almost fired for it. But our manager stepped in and pleaded his case to the DM.

I leave my doors and windows unlocked at my house. I was told by the white lady with blue hair down the street that locking them would be racist.
