What was Les doing, scheme-wise, that Kelly isn’t doing?

By most accounts, BK is a smarter x and O coach than Leslie was, so why is he not able to figure out something that Leslie figured out?

Remember when everyone was so excited “because we have an adult in charge now”?

Two totally different types of offenses..

I'll let one of the TD coaches explain in detail

I’m willing to bet those guys were better conditioned and tougher from practice and off season. That’s a start. But I’m sure there’s other things.

It’s called physicality and toughness, Les instilled it and placed a huge emphasis on it (maybe too much) while BK does not. For BK’s entire tenure here the OL has been unable to manage the simple task of run blocking, much less physically dominate and wear down the opponent.

We couldn't get Les out of here fast enough. Now we'd die for his run game.

The problems appear to stem way more from prep and development.

There was a poster here saying a football ops employee whos been there 2 decades told them that they don’t practice short yardage running at all whereas miles would rep them for hours.

Les was an offensive lineman when he played at Michigan. So old-school physicality and toughness was in his DNA from Schembechler.

These student/athletes just want to pass block on Sundays. They start in two point stances and stand up to get in the way of the rushing defensive player. Then they push and grab with their hands. The driving block with using forearms is a thing of the past.

That’s why they cannot run block.

Les ran consistently hard, long practices that built some tough, hard nosed players. He also focused running his offense around playing bully ball. He knew he could control the line of scrimmage, put heavy personnel in and just break most teams not named Alabama.

Which BK and other coaches won't do now because players will just up and leave and go to another school with easier practices. Which I feel is why Nick retired. Gone are the days of working your team like workhorses.

That being said, There is no excuse for players not being able to fire off the ball and push the person in front of you back when you know the snap count. We need to be under center and in 3 point stances getting off the ball like their jobs depend on it... because their jobs should depend on it.

I mean if you weigh over 330 pounds and you're getting pushed around by division two tackles, that's not good

1000%

Get in a three point stance, fire off on your man across from you using your feet and forearms. Get under him and lift him out of the way. Keep it simple.

Well; 1 reason is Les loved Guards. Road Grater blocking guards.
Back in the day people complained we had Guards playing Tackle.

They could bulldoze; but weren’t the best laterally and left something to be desired in the passing game. Les got criticized for lack of passing in the day; but his lines were built to run.

I think we have more “natural” tackles now; but they aren’t being coached. No reason for other teams to out rush us against a bad Ole Miss defense. That’s just sorry coaching.

Another is scheme;
Les was known for using Zone blocking. Some people criticized it at the time; but we ran for days sometimes. Only remember really getting shut down once (Fournette vs. Alabama; I’m sure it happened more; I just don’t remember it)
My guess based on watching the teams is a Les’ scheme was more simple and run 1st; while Kelly’s seems overly complicated at times and tries to be balanced or pass oriented. Sometimes I also feel like they’re confused on who to block. But I’ve never coached a down of football; so TIFWIW.
