We grew up in the golden era of the NFL where each week guys would sling it and have over 450 yards. Guys like Brady, Manning, Brees, Rodgers, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Ryan, Luck, Stafford,Palmer, Cutler, Wilson, Mcnabb etc. These guys could operate an offense. Now you will be lucky if you see a 300 yard game. Now there are four or five quarterbacks who are worth a damn allen, mahomes, jackson herbert and Burrow when healthy. Mahomes hasn’t been impressive these last couple of years. Why do you think quarterback play is so bad?

Lot more running QB's, 300 yards passing is now 250 with 50 rushing.

I like those guys but that’s nostalgia.
Mayfield, Goff, Daniels, Love… list can go on. All good.
I think maybe the expectations for what is good/solid qb play have changed with social media and the top 5 guys being far and away better. But hell Mayfield just threw for 41 TDs last year and you didn’t even mention him.

They were operating against base cover 2 on 80% of drop backs. Defenses have gotten far more sophisticated.

Allen, Herbert, Lamar, mayfield and jones this year could go toe to toe with any other year as of right now for top play comparatively.

You then have guys like Daniels and love who will likely be elite this year too

Mahomes is drifting on the abyss the last 3 years but at any time he could find his old form

With 2 high safeties being run all the time now you aren’t going to see deep

Go back and research who was playing QB on other teams when all of those guys were playing. There’s always been bad quarterbacks. Hell, the Saints ran out Billy Joe Hobert and Billy Joe Tolliver.

I remember when everyone hated high scoring offenses and yearned for the days of defense.

Listing the worst qb in the league doesn’t help your argument.

This did not happen every week in the NFL, not even close. And those QBs didn’t get much on the ground.

I think you’re just remembering the good ones, and forgetting about the Aaron Brooks type QBs. Heck, Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl.

Agreed. I don’t think QB play is that bad compared to years past.

Offensive line play overall has become terrible. I feel like there are a dozen or so great offensive lineman, but everyone else is terrible…but I’m a Saints fan, so my perspective might be skewed a bit.

Quality of play in college has gone down due to lack of development because of NIL and no transfer rules which is now impacting the quality of play in the NFl.

Combine that with starting qb’s in their rookie years before they understand the NFL game. Most of those great QB’s had to sit and learn sometimes multiple years as a backup first.

Guys like Joe Burrow that can step in and lead an NFL offense straight from college are a rarity and no one has patience anymore.

With the emergence of Herbert living up to his potential and the staying power of guys like Love and Baker, the opposite of OP is true. Lamar, Allen, Herbert, and Mahomes is as good of a top 4 as you will ever find in NFL history.

Also defense has become so insane in the NFL. The complexity, fluidity and adaptation on the fly is almost another sport compared to even like 10 years ago.

The collective bargaining agreement limits teams at practices now.

I think offensive lines probably the the main position that it's affecting.

You can also tell how the tackling has dropped off for teams on defense.

It's affected a lot of positions.

Idk, a guy like Sam Darnold has gone 17-4 over the last two seasons and doesn’t get any respect nationally.

Players like Lamar Jackson & Jalen hurts are transcending the game with what they are able to do with their feet.

Mahomes & Josh Allen are generational talents who have redefined the position.

It’s not horrible or worse, it’s just different.

Go listen to Brees podcast from a week ago. He said it’s insane how good qb play is currently across the league

Completely disagree. I think we are close to a point that half the starting QB's are good to generational, and probably another 5-7 or so that are average and another 5ish that are rookies/second year guys. You probably only have a handful of teams (Saints, Jets, Raiders, Dolphins (very divided), Jags (?), Panthers (?), Browns (?)) that would move on tomorrow to upgrade QB if they had a chance.

We might be in the best era of QB's in a long time.

Good to generational in no order:
-Lamar
-Allen
-Burrow
-Dak
-Goff
-Love
-Mahomes
-Herbert
-Stafford
-Hurts
-Rodgers
-Darnold
-Baker
-Daniels

Average to good:
-Murray
-Stroud
-D. Jones
-Lawerence
-Geno
-Tua
-Purdy

Rookies/Second Year/Need Time:
-Penix
-Williams
-Nix
-Maye
-Dart
-Ward
