When a group of machines are all taken, does etiquette say to:

1. Choose one and enquire how many sets remain, thus claiming a particular machine for when the current user is finished?

2. Hover amongst the machines and rely on a social contact between current users and those waiting to recognize who had been waiting the longest?

I never ask how many sets somebody has left. I feel like that's just another way of saying "can you hurry up?". I hover around until they're done, first come first serve after they get up. If i'm super desperate i'll ask "mind if i get a quick one in?" While they're resting between sets.

The Pec Dec machine in my gym is a nightmare, and we have 2 of them. ALWAYS taken

Why not just do DB flys?

You could definitely substitute those, i just feel the machine takes the balancing act out of it and really isolates the pecs

Sometimes, that's exactly how I intend it. I have a lot of young people at my gym who tend to get lost in their phones and have nowhere to be.

Do you know what helps you balance the dumbbells?

When they are fricking around, taking their sweet time, and playing on the phone between sets this is the proper question.

If they're really using it then just ask if you can work in with them for a few sets.

Sure, but dumbbells require more stabilizer muscle engagement like shoulders and core while the pec deck maintains constant tension in the pecs throughout the movement and is beneficial for hypertrophy. Not saying one is better than the other just that i prefer the machine when available

I just spend extra time warming up. All the squat racks were taken earlier this week. More stretching in the other room. Then I walk in to where the racks are and have the super pleasant look on my face as I have my real man 10 mm belt over my shoulders and my collars in my hand.

Zero tolerance for the trainers that leave their shite everywhere and transition four clients through five different spots helps. Two of them have seen me for over five years, and I've spoken fewer than ten words to either of them the entire time. It sends a message. These are the guys having MILFs doing Bulgarian split squats on my favorite bench, etc.

If someone is playing on their phone which is 99% of the time since I go to a shitty commercial gym (LA Fitness) I just ask them are they there to train or play on the phone? More often than not they get up and go to different machine. I can’t tell you how awful my gym is regarding idiots playing on phone or the amount of tripods I have to dodge that are setup with these idiots filming themselves. I wish it was the 90’s when all this stuff didn’t exist.

I feel like for those of us that are 40+ most things like this can be settled with eye contact, a finger point and a head nod. No words are generally needed.

Especially considering they usually have ear buds or comically huge headphones on.

I like to use the squat rack to do BB forearm wrist curls…

…and then sit in a chair between sets like the powerlifters do.

What are we supposed to just stand around for 5 minutes between our sets?

i would 100% do 10 more sets out of spite. I use my phone for all sorts of stuff in the gym. I don't like staring off into space.

Shaking my damn head.

Yeah well go play with your phone somewhere else. Get off the freaking machine. Is that such a hard concept for you guys that do that shite?

No, you wouldn't. I'd put you in the Camel Clutch and break your back or pick you up and throw you as hard as I could into the plate glass windows of cycle room or aerobics room whichever is closer.
