iOS 26 is just awful - hold off installing as long as possible

1) Let's start with the low-hanging fruit, no one asked for this kind of blurry see-through glass aesthetic. Whoever thought that making things harder to see on a cell phone was a good idea should be fired yesterday.

2) They did something well a few versions back and made a search bar in most apps. Inexplicably, they've now moved the search bar to the very bottom where if you're scrolling from the bottom, you'll enter the search bar instead.

3) The battery life is being drained faster after the new update. Apple says it's just temporary post-update indexing, but I think we all know that's likely not true.

4) More storage eaten up by the OS. The update download itself is around 5 GB. Seemed to bloat even more after installation.

1) you are aware that you can turn off the transparency, right?

2) Search bar at the bottom is more ergonomical

Even with that off it looks like something out of Fisher Price.

Everything looks like it was designed for a 13 year old girl.

The search bar being at the bottom is far better. I was pleased to see moving the address bar down is now an option.

Of course it's true. Happens every Big update. It has to re-index and that of course burns battery until it's finished...

And what about all the new features you get with new iOS the OP didn't; mention?

Apple can't win. If they update and give you a bunch of new features people bitch. If they don't update people say they are no longer innovating and stuck in the mud. Shaking my damn head.

And for the record I don't Like the transparency either. But I just turned it off.

And holding off as long as possible is silly. You are exposing yourself to security threats that are constantly being patched with every regular update that people bitch about out of ignorance. Imagine the bitching if they get hacked or hit with a virus.

I even have to get on my wife and best friend about that every time. They get pissed upgrades and I have to tell em would you rather get hacked?

ETA: My Pixel updates every other time I turn it on. Why would I bitch about that?

Are you implying this is a surprise? That has always been the apple target audience.

This isn't true. If you stay on iOS 18 you will still get security updates. They released 18.7 the same time as iOS 26. If you stay on 18, you still get the security updates for years.

Hmm..Ok maybe so. I guess I wouldn't know cause I don't live in the past like that with my head buried in the sand..

Why not upgrade for all the new features? Not like it cost anything.

So Gen X. It's designed for women of all ages!

The d/l was 6GB for me. It's fine. I don't care, I want CarPlay to stop resetting my icon layout randomly. Watch won't update, it says my phone needs to be updated first, which happened yesterday. Cool.

I would assume only corporate phones tend to be the ones that dont update or wait many months if not years to update.

Eh, I don't mind it. I'll probably get tired of it but would get tired of any OS design.

iPadOS26 is dope. It's turned my 5 year old ipad pro into a mini/slim macbook. That alone has me feeling optimistic about ipados / Apple.
If they can just get Terminal and XCode over to ipad pros, that would be a massive game changer.

Same as with any new piece of software there are those who are guinea pigs and those who avoid being on the bleeding edge.

ie: if there's not a reason I wait for the the at least the first dot revision.

Remember when we got important things like App Store, push notifications, multitasking, control center, and wallet?

Fanboys are fricking weird. Whether you bang the Apple or Android drum, who TF cares. Just buy what you like and go on about your business.

I updated last night. Carplay looks better and is more responsive. I can see some aesthetic changes, but it's fine, even on my old fart eyes.

I updated my iphone, iPad, and MBA to the latest software.

Deleted messages, as far back as 2023, are now reappearing. I really don't undertand why, as all three devices have been logged into the same iCloud account for years and years.

I don't have anything to hide, but this should help show someone that "deleted" is never really "deleted."

Here's how to turn transparency off or down...

quote:

Open Settings on your iPhone.
Tap Accessibility.
Select Display & Text Size.
Toggle on Reduce Transparency.
settings

This setting adds darker backgrounds to translucent areas like Control Center, app icons, and app folders, so you should see increased contrast between elements throughout the system.

Note that Reduce Transparency doesn't completely eliminate all translucent elements or change button shapes – it simply makes translucent areas more opaque while maintaining the overall iOS 26 aesthetic.

Add Reduce Transparency to Control Center

For quick access to this setting, you can add it to your Accessibility Shortcuts to get to it from the Control Center interface:

Go to Settings ? Accessibility.
Scroll down and tap Accessibility Shortcut.
Select Reduce Transparency in the list.
Additional Contrast Options

If you're still having legibility issues after enabling Reduce Transparency, return to Settings ? Accessibility ? Display & Text Size, then toggle on Increase Contrast. Note that enabling both Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast will cause icons to lose most of their translucency.

The Liquid Glass design is still in beta, so Apple will likely continue refining the visual effects based on feedback. A wider official rollout of iOS 26 is expected sometime in September.

If you use icloud sync for messages, it can be terribly difficult to actually delete texts and then they murder your icloud storage.

I personally prefer not to sync. I only want my texts "backed up" to the icloud daily and not sync'd. I set messages to auto delete anything over 30 days old. This has kept my messages storage usage very reasonable for me. I realize I'm probably odd in that I only want to get messages on my phone and not any other device.
