On Tuesday, hundreds of farmers from across the state gathered before representatives to voice their concerns and ask for help amid terrible markets, higher input costs, and tariffs. Many emphasized the direness of the situation, with one farmer saying, "I have never been as worried as I am now about whether or not my kids and grandkids will be able to carry on."

Another farmer called tariffs the "ice cream on the cake of a perfect storm." They continued, “In the short term, they have no choice but to mail us a check. I don’t know a farmer that likes the check program. Nobody wants to take the taxpayer dollars, but nobody wants to go broke; nobody wants to lose everything. Long term, we have to have options, markets, and places to sell our product.”

I wish I had a check program to fall back on when times were tough.

I’d rather bail out farmers than banks, the auto industry, airlines, etc.

Then buy/rent land, equipment, take out a yearly million plus crop loan, plant and hope God provides you weather or pay Entergy for the juice to make it rain to make a good crop, compete with non US producers whose countries do not have an EPA to regulate crop protection chemicals, and break even if you are lucky due to low commodity prices.

They always throw the family legacy bullshite around. Your kids/grandkids are not entitled to keep the farm! What is this? Dowtan Abbey where the family entitled to the land in perpetuity?

Also the narrative about farmers being good people. That’s BS too. I know come cut throat farmers. Just as bad as used car salesman.

We don’t want to take the government checks, but we’re still taking them.

It’s not Trump’s fault India dumped a shitload of rice on the world market.

This could have happened at any time the last twenty years or more.

We can’t compete with how cheap the rest of the world can grow rice and we are a drop in the bucket in global production. Rice farmers in Louisiana would have folded years ago if not for crawfish.

I’d rather bail out none of them. Gotta start somewhere. Might as well with them.

They're not meant to carry on. Your family farm is seen as the enemy. It will soon be rolled over and consumed by the industrial farm machine that we have put at the center of our country's future, consolidating the food supply into the hands of the few.

Farming insurance and the government is a way of life for a lot of farmers.

Your “etc.” is doing a lot of work. I don’t know of a single industry that doesn’t live off the government. There is no way out and it will destroy the US.

I’m surprised the crawfish industry hasn’t gone full bore with this yet. I guess they’re happy to just keep raising prices.

They have. Landry asked the Fed for a bailout last year. Kennedy has sponsored a bill, called the CRAWDAD Act (Crawfish Recovery Assistance from Weather Disasters and Droughts Act) specifically for that purpose.
