Laid off federal workers continue to struggle getting new job, jobless claim data shows

I was hopeful we’d see the private sector be able to absorb all this freed up labor. It looks however that it’s just not happening.
I now worry that generous federal hiring the last 5 years or so was masking the ai shitshow in the private labor market.
Hopefully water finds its level soon and they can get jobs.

Nationally, jobless claim data is just fine. It’s in the “federal govt tri state” area where it’s really really bad right now
Jobless claims soaring.

Why would anyone want to hire your run of the mill government worker?

Uhhhh….you may want to research the 1990s
Something like 500,000 defense dept workers were laid off as Cold War ended. They were absorbed with ease by tech sector.
Steve Jobs once said that defense dept layoffs were one of the main reason Silicon Valley boomed

are not the same as a bumnch of hollow position DEI type jobs that were eliminated.
Further, that bloat had only grown over the last few decades. They'll find a home somewhere, just not going to be a cushy high paying government job.

Job market sucks right now for everyone, private or public sector.
I was laid off in mid June and have yet to land something despite being in a favorable market in ATL. I know several folks in similar or worse predicaments.

The tech market is especially tough. The federal contract I was on got terminated in February as part of the DOGE cuts, along with a lot of other contracts that were tech heavy.
Between the adoption of AI and the glut of people in the market right now it's tough.

The quotes make it sound like a regional issue. They will likely need to move for work.

You got any CRM experience and a secret clearance? My fed government company is hiring here in Tampa

This isn’t the 1990s.
I would hold an opposite opinion if it was 30 years ago.

Good. Get a real job lazy fricks

If I had zero skills, I would get in the car and go deliver stuff for Walmart and Amazon. I think if you want to, you can work from can until can't.

So, all those DEI hires aren't qualified to do anything else. Surprising I tell you. Only so many human resources job openings out there.

How would anyone think the private sector had the capacity for this?

There are plenty of jobs paying 6 figures
Just not the jobs you want

They’re probably struggling to find a job because whenever they’re asked during their interview what all they did the past five years, they can’t talk about anything tangible or productive they did other than sit on their asses and collect a paycheck.

Does not equate to what is currently available.
Those workers in the 90’s had a work ethic, real experience, and no sense of entitlement.
You are promoting a false equivalency.
