What happened to the ole Don't Eat Shell Fish In Months Without R's ?

This is why the saying is there, because the water is too hot in the summer to prevent bacteria.

It really does happen every year. In almost every case it is an old person or person with a very compromised immune system.

Which seems a bit off in that I'd be willing to bet the water temp in May is cooler than it is in SeptembeR..and maybe OctobeR (at least early October)

You eating raw oysters in September? I'd even throw October in there now with the perceived seasonal shift. Its pretty damn hot in October.

Vibrio optimal growth water temp ranges all the way down to 77°. Probably not until late October that water temps approach or go lower than that.

It does, but this summer is a statistical outlier to the high side compared t normal averages.

That sounds about right. I’m sure there are pockets of warm and cold. But why risk it in the summer. I guess because I live in south Louisiana and I can wait until December to enjoy and get my fill for a few months during the cold months. And yes this definitely happens every year.

Rule I generally follow. Raw in the R months and load up the freezer with some grand isle oysters to fry during the summer.

I thought vibrio was a flesh eating bacteria that entered the body through cuts.

I didn’t know it could kill you if ingested.
