He is doing this to create a sovereign wealth fund.

quote:

“But the president has made it clear all the way back to the campaign, he thinks that in the end, it would be great if the U.S. could start to build up a sovereign wealth fund. So I’m sure that at some point there’ll be more transactions, if not in this industry then other industries.”

quote:

Trump signed an order in early February to start a sovereign wealth fund, a mechanism primarily used by smaller countries with vast natural resources that are used as funding backstops for transactions. Norway leads the world in such funds with some $1.8 trillion in assets, according to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute. China is next, and multiple Middle East nations also have large funds.

Sovereign wealth funds are usually created from surpluses. How can you create one when you run massive deficits, and have a $36 trillion debt.
Seems more prudent to pay reduce deficits, and paydown the debt with surpluses.

When we're 38t in debt.

Sounds like Trump likes Norways soft socialism.

You are applying personal finance logic to a government with a constitutional right to print money on a whim.

SWF is necessary, and more productive than paying down debt (currently). Assets like Intel grow at a faster rate than the interest we pay on the national debt, and having assets on the balance sheet help keep interest rates low for the future

We need austerity, but austerity alone can’t get us out of this hole

Diving deeper into the plans.

- makes the government less dependent on issuing Treasury debt to raise money.

- The executive order says the fund’s purpose is to “promote fiscal sustainability, lessen the burden of taxes on American families and small businesses, establish economic security for future generations, and promote United States economic and strategic leadership internationally.”

One of the most prominant countries with a sovereign wealth fund is Norway, who's government owns 70% of the stock market.

This is literally a push toward collective ownership.

Noted socialist Bernie Sanders approves this strategy.

My wish list for future nationalization:

Tesla/Space X
Boeing
Exxon
PF Changs
Walmart
Zatarains

quote:

Liberal U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders on Wednesday threw his support behind President Donald Trump's plan to convert U.S. grants to chipmakers, including $10.9 billion for Intel, into government stakes in the companies.

Indeed. He's been proposing similar for years.

It sounds like many of you would prefer we subsidize companies and get nothing in return

Bullying companies like intel, who suck off the tit of the taxpayer, into having to give up equity is a good way to de-incentivize pork spending. Instead of just lobbying costs, there are now dilutive costs to getting government money

Trump is copying the China model imo. I wouldn't call that socialism

This is just more of "too big to fail" bullshite that supposed free market companies that use their market position to be greedy af to consumers ....

but come running to the government for handouts and welfare when they need it

How in the hell are watchdogs and regulators expected to faithfully watch Intel when the fed govt is financially benefits from pushing through any mergers or applications?

"But we need Intel for national security!" Fukk em

Exactly. Stop taking my tax dollars to subsidize the companies who are screwing over the AMERICAN workers by outsourcing jobs.

Now, I 100% understand the concern due to future leadership in this nation. AND THAT is where we, as the AMERICAN CITIZEN, has to step up and vote and be loud. Anything the Federal Gov does can be amplified for bad things.

Yep. My preference is no subsidy at all

But people whining about Trump securing 10% of intel for $10b that the prior administration was going to give them for free, is insane

And he will be cheered on by people who previously decried government picking winners and losers like Solyndra.

Just wait until the government says it wants an active voting participation on the boards.....yeah, that just won't happen.....right?
