"The welfare state that we have today can no longer be financed with what we produce in the economy," Merz said in the town of Osnabrück.

The coalition partners had already agreed to reforming the social insurance system, which covers health insurance, pensions and unemployment benefits, due to rising costs and gaps in the federal budget.

The chancellor acknowledged that making cuts to social welfare would not be easy for the center-left SPD, but called for the two parties to work together.

At the same time, he stressed there would "not be any increase in income tax on medium-sized companies in Germany with this federal government under my leadership," despite SPD Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil earlier saying that tax increases on middle and higher-income earners could not be ruled out.

Closing their borders should be an obvious first step and start deportations of all illegals.

Yeah. Getting all non-Germans off of the dole should be Step 1.

Everything has become so expensive in the Western world that traditional economics are about to be upended. We've fricked the markets beyond repair.

Its not sustainable, and is showing cracks already. Service gaps and exorbitant costs.

This is the answer to the socialist apologists who point to Germany as the success story.

Eventually you run out of other people’s money.

Next Dem administration is going to at least triple as it reinstates USAID. That’s in addition to bailing out all outlets still surviving.

Calling a “democratic socialist” party “center-left” is laughable.

The problem is, the people who work so the government can provide freebies hasn't been mad enough about it. Maybe that will change now.

It’s what I’ve been worried about when we hit the debt service wall domestically.

At that point we will either have a reset or a unrest.

I'm not a fan of Germany, don't trust them one bit. But it does seem like the ruin caused by runaway inflation is still imprinted on their politicians' memory. Unfortunately, American government and bureaucracy has been overrun by intellectual lightweights who can't learn from failures of the past.

The plan all along.

Break the country with poor illegals and take from the citizens.

How did they not see this coming?

Also, if you want to have your citizens riot and reject your leadership, remove their social support system while continuing to support immigrants.

Good luck to them.

Can’t they just raise taxes on businesses and “the rich”?

I have been assured this is the way.

Not only continuing to support immigrants, but also continuing to support government employees in the manner to which they've become accustomed.

First step by Merz should be a 50% reduction in salary and benefits for every single govt employee. That would at least demonstrate that he was incentivizing his fellow public servants to run a tighter ship, for their own benefit if nothing else.
