Southwest Airlines is changing another longstanding seating policy.

Beginning Jan. 27, 2026, the airline will require passengers who “encroach upon the neighboring seat” to proactively purchase an additional ticket, which might not be refunded.

Previously, passengers could either pay the cost of an extra seat ahead of time (and later receive a refund) or show up at the airport and request an extra seat at no charge, which made Southwest a carrier of choice for many plus-size passengers.

According to the latest change, a second seat will be nonrefundable unless the flight departs with at least one open seat and both seats are purchased within the same fare class. Under the new policy, passengers will also be required to purchase the second seat in advance.

Hell, if you are too fat to fit into one seat, why on earth shouldn't you have to purchase 2 adjacent seats? Nobody wants your fat arse belly or legs touching them. It's just common courtesy.

As is...

90% of the time I fly someone is in my space. I hate it. And they're not all fatties, just saying.

What happens if a fat person doesn’t buy the extra seat and there is no extra seat to buy when they show up for the flight? Will they kick them off?

My opinion is if you are fat there should be a section for oversized people that can’t properly fit in a seat. They can all smash against each other in that section and see how it feels.

Nothing whatsoever wrong with them having hobbies and travel. BUT.... if they are excessively overweight... then they have to pay for an extra seat. That's just common sense. Why should they be allowed to use up half my space as well, basically not allowing me to use my seat in a proper fashion.

At least WN is about to lose the Jetway Jesus crowd when seat assignments start. The absolute fricking worst was a Somali I sat next to from Winnipeg to MSP, I was trying not to vomit in my mouth from the smell. I'd have preferred a fat bastard bleeding into my seat over that.

What is there is one open seat and multiple overweight people who purchased an extra seat?
