Just got back. Few notes:
1. Their president is also a once in a lifetime gift for their country.
2. Gang activity of any kind is a life sentence.
3. Face tattoos (for gang affiliation) is an automatic life sentence.
4. Claim to be safest place in Western Hemisphere.
5. Lots of growth and construction.
Country is half size of Louisiana.

I have some very good Salvadoran friends and they said no problemo walking around the city at 2am. They now feel very safe.

My fiancé is a native of Eo Salvador. She said crime and violence was rampant 20 years ago. Bribery by all government officials, entire neighborhoods being robbed (gangs would block the entrances and then go house to house), car jacking, violence. Her friends now report that’s it’s safer then ever, crime is basically non-existent. There are complaints about collateral damage and some innocents getting caught in the dragnet.
They do have volcanos and frequent earthquakes though.

I was in Santa Ana (2nd-biggest city, about the size of Baton Rouge) last summer (2024) for a week of Spanish school. It's certainly safe, and I enjoyed my time there.
It's still very poor, though, and big corporations are generally not interested in investing in economies controlled by authoritarian governments. Bukele is certainly popular, because an authoritarian government is certainly preferable to chaos and constant danger, but I wouldn't bet on El Salvador becoming any kind of paradise anytime soon.
Aside from a couple of nice surf resorts, El Salvador lacks elite tourist attractions. Places such as Lake Coatepeque and Cerro Verde are pretty, but probably not a sufficient reason to go.
