My son is about to get his license and a car/truck and I want to make sure I don't get scammed. Some people have suggested CarMax but I'm not so sure.

Search cars.com or Cargurus.com for make, model, mileage, and travel radius. Check the car fax.

Enterprise. Most of what they sell are former company cars and not daily rentals. They only sell cars they have had zero issues with and no incidents/accidents. They only sell cars that have been 100% owned by them. They do not sell cars bought at auction. They will even negotiate on trade-in value unlike carmax.

I'm in the exact position as you with our youngest. I haven't been in the car market for a while and the price of used vehicles has me reeling.
I thought I could find a nice single cab pickup for around 6 - 8k but that is a pipe dream.
Thus far i've been scouring autotrader.com, cargurus.com, carmax, and just getting word out to friends/family that I'm looking if they see anything.
Good luck in your search.

Drive through a rich neighborhood and start knocking on doors of people that have older cars that look like they don’t get driven.
Or find a rich dude selling theirs on facebook.

CarMax, FB Marketplace, workplace. If on Marketplace, scope out the seller to see if it is just a reseller or if it is a one owner scenario.

Also avoid any car that doesn’t have the stock wheels
Unless it’s like 20 years or older

Check with your insurance before buying. Our insurance through USAA was 5k per year cheaper by getting a newer vehicle with all the driving aids.

You have got to have a budget and narrow down what you are looking for first.

Carmax is really easy and has everything, but you do pay for it. Same in most ways as carvana but they are more hit and miss.

If you go the traditional dealer route, prepare to play games, nothing has changed. That’s why you need to hone in on what you want, and what a fair price is first. Email multiple dealers until someone is willing to play ball enough that you think you can make a deal.

I will give a shoutout to walker VW/Acura for a purchase in April, they really made things easy enough that I showed up, made a pass around the car, signed the paperwork and left. I was honestly pretty shocked there were no games or tricks.

FYI, if you qualify, the used EV and plug in hybrid credit expires next month. Good deals there to be had.

I had a surprisingly pleasant experience at Carmax. We test drove four different vehicles (with my mechanic aboard) and found a vehicle we liked. Price was agreeable, Went in, paid for the vehicle, out the door. No haggling no pressure. Whole process, including test drives took about 90 minutes.

I bought a car recently in Katy Texas and it took 5 to 6 hours. I was so ready to go I only got them to come off around $1500 bucks. Goal was $2000 but I said frick it.

Just went through this with my oldest. I'd put out an alert to all family members that you trust and let them know if they are considering a new car that you would pay more than trade-in for theirs. Ended up getting a 2013 Escape SEL AWD with 120k miles on it from a family member for $3k because dealer was only going to give them $2k. If I were to buy this from CarMax or other dealership, it would have been $12k in my area.
