Was my identity stolen? Received a surprise medical bill.

The other day I get a bill in the mail from some medical laboratories company for $1900. The company is legit with website etc. the phone number on the paperwork corresponds with the website.
I called them because I was confused as to why I even got this. Their billing dept explains to me it’s for rehab services at a facility in Florida from the end of last year. I’ve never been in rehab in my life. She tried to confirm my birthday but was off by 15 days. I explained all of this to her and that I would not be paying this. She said absolutely nothing other than that she would call me back which hasn’t happened yet.
Part of me thinks this could be a scam but the paperwork looks very legit and the phone numbers check out. The only other thing I can think is someone else is using my identity but nothing else has been affected as far as I know. Who uses a fake identity to go to rehab?

Call your insurance company and see if they have any history of it

The answer is probably a simple fix but as far as this board is concerned, you will probably be investigated federally and spend several years in prison.

No, they are currently attempting to steal it though
Don't give them ANY information

You don't need to worry about the bill. Thanks to the Obamacare debacle medical debt can not be sent to any credit bureau or to any form of collections. The debt can't have any affect on your credit rating. Part 2 of this legislation just went into effect this past March and any lingering old negative credit info regarding past medical debt must be scrubbed from everyones credit files. Your address was probably mixed up with someone with a similar name. But I would be curious and follow up on the matter

Just in case, put a freeze on all three credit bureaus. Mine was stolen years ago. I got a credit alert. Someone attempted to open a credit card under my name with all the correct information. I was able to locate the name of the person, phone number they used, and address.
I reported it to the police (in another state). Never heard back.
I don’t think there’s much you can do if your identity is stolen other then do a freeze on all credit bureaus. This was several years ago and nothing has happened since then. At least of which I am aware.

Just a mistake. I got a $18k bill in the mail last week 8 months after child birth and 6 months after we 'paid everything' already. Called them up and billing apartment was as confused as we were.

Someone said this already, but it’s worth repeating - freeze your credit. Not just you, everyone should do this unless you’re actively trying to get a loan, then immediately freeze it after.

Nah not a scam! On the deep/darkweb they have carding services mostly russians and Chinese hackers that use Trojan horses to back door companies with people CC and Debit card info. They then sell cards or pay bills for them with your info. They do the same thing with buying vacations 25% of face value. Hotel and car rentals as well. 1k you pay $250 Goodluck

I used to be a loan officer and would run across credit reports that merged 2 people with similar names and geographic backgrounds. Like 2 named John Taylor that 30 years ago lived in NOLA. It used to be pretty common for Junior/Senior/III.
It takes a while for merged files to get straight as every address, trade line, and inquiry has to be retraced and determined which goes with who.
It’s really easy to see when the John Taylors have different Bdates, SSN, and jobs history.

I had a similar situation with St Elizabeth’s in Gonzales. I received a huge bill for thousands concerning an ER visit. The date on the bill was the same date that I was there to get blood drawn for lab work. I was in and out of the lab in 5 minutes with no issues. I called them about the bill from the ER. They went into great detail about my ER visit; even stating that I was combative and left against dr’s orders. I was stunned. How could such an error happen? I went round and round with the person on the phone. I asked for a supervisor to please call me to explain how this could happen. I never got a return call, but the bill disappeared so I forgot about it. Medical billing is wrought with mistakes and fraud.

The weird thing is I wasn’t even in the same state time of services rendered (supposedly). If it is a scam I have no issue ignoring it but this looks as real as any medical bill I have ever received.

You could have been in a fugue state.

Happened to me last year - guy had same name
Upwards of $20k billed to my insurance with 2 visits. Called and they filed for me and I even gave them the name & address of the person.

Same thing happened to me last year, 4-figure ambulance bill but it was from a real hospital, so the bill was real, not a scammer.
The bill was tied to the address of a house I sold in 2017, but they were 2 numbers off on my SSN, so it was definitely some sort of identity theft.
I told the hospital good luck finding the guy with that SSN. They admitted they were screwed.
