I feel like there was just a thread on him not long ago but i couldnt find it even with google search. He's hit or miss with me. I love Boogie Nights and Hard Eight. Magnolia is pretty good. Wasn't a big fan of *ducks* There Will Be Blood and Inherent Vice. His new movie with Leo comes out next month so i started to watch all his films i havent yet seen:
The Master
Punch Drunk Love
Phantom Thread
Licorice Pizza
Started with The Master last night and im not sure how i feel about it. From a pure acting stand point it is top notch with incredible performances from Phoenix and PSH. But my god was the plot slow and ultimately ended up nowhere. I found an old thread on it from 2013 that had some thoughtful takes on it. A few people argued that the story is not important in this film. It's a character study with a theme of organized religion being all bullshite which is pretty evident since Freddie (Phoenix) never ends up changing by the end. Others argued that without the presence of an actual story movies are shite, and this is his worst one. I can see both sides of the argument, but i think id have to put it near the bottom on my PTA rankings. I have heard its better with multiple viewings.
Started Punch Drunk Love today. Only 30 minutes in but i think this one will be one of my favorites. I find Sandler's character more easily relatable than alot of his other downtrodden main characters. Will try to catch Licorice Pizza and Phantom Thread this weekend.
Any personal favorites?

There Will Be Blood w/ Boogie Nights a close second.

Punch Drunk Love is great, and by far the best film Adam Sandler has ever appeared in.

The Master - Masterpiece
Punch Drunk Love - Masterpiece
Phantom Thread - Masterpiece and should have won best picture
Licorice Pizza - not my favorite but still good
PTA is one of the few directors who, whenever he makes a film, I’m gong to see it, no questions asked
My favorite is There Will Be Blood

Im really only familiar with Boogie Nights and There Will be Blood.
Im will have to go did a little deeper on the films of PTAAA, I liked both. Consider Boogie Nights to be one of the best.

Magnolia is almost one of the greatest films ever made, but as it exists, it's nowhere near the top 10.
I like everything he does, but I can't say I love any of them really

For me, There Will Be Blood is way overrated. On the other hand, Inherent Vice is my favorite PTA film and way underrated. It's like The Big Lebowski meets Chinatown Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. It's a fantastic film, endlessly re-watchable to me.

I'd rank them
1A. Boogie Nights
1B. Magnolia
Phantom Thread
There will be Blood
Licorice Pizza
Hard Eight
Punch Drunk Love
The Master
I've not seen all of Inherent Vice.
Magnolia is really underrated. Tom Cruise's performance is fantastic and despite the kickoff of the final act (which I don't mind) the pacing, dialogue, camera work and narrative development is first class.

Hard Eight was fantastic.
It's not my favorite of his, but it's great and more accessible than any of his other movies. Kind of his equivalent to Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket/Rushmore, where if you ignore the regular cast members that are in all of their movies, they could have been directed by just about anyone.
Inherent Vice is the only movie of his that I'm not a fan of, but I'll need to give it another shot. Phantom Thread is probably a lesser film than Vice, but it's great to look at.

I think Magnolia is my favorite. I liked the performance of John C Reilly and Melora Walters. At first I didn't like the performance of Tom Cruise but on subsequent watches I warmed up to it. Though TC did other dramatic performances after Magnolia, it was about here that he focused on the switch to the action hero role. I've read that TC was nervous about his role in Magnolia. He wanted to be in the movie because of the notoriety of PTA but upon accepting the role he needed a lot of talking to get in the proper mind set.

Boogie Nights is a top 5/10 movie for me. Magnolia is a step below.

Boogie Nights is and was good. And to think Mark Whalberg has regrets about making it.
I've only seen TWBB and Punch Drunk Love. I liked PDL. TWBB is probably too intense for me.

Boogie Nights might be the best film of the 90’s, I appreciate TWBB but it’s so bleak and borderline unenjoyable to watch. Magnolia was good but went a bit overboard trying to top Boogie Nights
