What’s with the obsession for having nicknames for players and/or position groups?

The obsession some of you have with childish nicknames is really fricking bizarre

My grandma would pat you on the head and say awww that’s so cute

Maybe it's just some people's way of having a conversation, talking about the team they support, holding on to a piece of their childhood, having a good time, and not being a sour puss.

My grandma would puff on her cigarette and say, "if it isn't hurting you, then STFU and go play outside."

Some people like to take a more lighthearted approach to life and allow themselves to experience joy. Sometimes, a silly nickname is part of that.

This has been a standard practice in the history of the sport. Sports writers like Grantland Rice ascribed nicknames that came to represent a player or team such as The Four Horsemen, or Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside.
A part of the national interest in the 1958 championship team at LSU involved the Chinese Bandits, Go Team and White team.
Fans and the media react positively to these names. Some of the first branding practices.

Willie Teal, James Britt, Chris Williams and Marcus Quinn, had a nickname, but it wasn't childish, sounds like you need a tissue for your issue

Do not go look at rosters of the major sports from over 100 years ago unless you want to really cry.
