I used to, and would shop at insuremytrip.com. On the rare occasions I had claims, they were paid with no problem. Now, I just carry an annual, multi-trip policy through Allianz.

I don’t, but my parents (mid 60s) do. They had a 2 week rafting trip down the Colorado River scheduled and my mom tripped on an uneven sidewalk the day before and broke her shoulder. The policy paid in full and pretty quickly too.

I always do when I have a big investment at stake. It gives me peace of mind.

With one exception, I never have felt the need to purchase travel insurance. American Express provides me enough insurance that I've never needed it.

Only time I bought any sort of travel protection is when my wife was 8 months pregnant and we went to Mexico. Paid for one of those medical private jet things to get us back to the states should she go into labor.

No. I use insurance for things that I cannot self insure or would cause extra financial issues should something be "lost" like home, health and cars.

By booking refundable fares and accommodations on credit cards that offer protection and having a health plan with world wide urgent and emergent I don't feel as if expenses occurred during a trip would cause extreme fincancial peril worthy of adding it on.

Boomers love that stuff though.

I buy international medical coverage on UHC Safe Trip when I leave the country. It’s cheap and covers repatriation which can cost tens of thousands if needed.

Travel insurance generally starts at 7% and goes to about 12% on avg. That means you need to use it to fully cover a trip every 15 trips to make it financially make sense.

I don’t buy it generally speaking, as I usually book things that can be adjustable, with a cancellation policy, or self insure.

It’s often easier and cheaper to pay for airfare that can be changed and a hotel that can be changed, then travel insurance. Beyond those most things have cancellation policy’s of 24 hours or so.

What does this cost annually and what does it typically cover?

If I'm purchasing travel insurance, I always use Allianz, but I wasn't aware of an annual option.

Thanks all.

Digging deeper I will have to get it for medical coverage. My wife and I are on Medicare and it doesn’t cover anything outside the US. I am not worried about the cost of the trip, but I don’t want any bills from a Scotland or Ireland hospital.

This year it ran me $750 for their AllTrips Executive coverage.

Allianz Plan Link

I do at least 4 trips/year to some very remote locations around the world so the main reason is medical evacuation; I insure for possible catastrophes and not much else. The only time I've used it was splitting a tooth on a flight to Sydney. Not fun but an emergency dentist took care of it the next morning.

Ah, a lot of travel to Syria and Sudan, eh? Just in case you’re vacationing and a civil war breaks out, makes total sense.

We're about to make our first international trip with another to follow not that long after. I wish that would have known about the annual coverages. I purchased the individual trip coverage so I paid way too much.

I don't necessarily need trip reimbursement. I mainly want the medical. After reading this thread, I looked into the travel medical coverage from BCBS and UHC. For the future, that's the way I'm leaning.
