Including wins against Florida St, Michigan and Texas. Losses to UGA, Texas and South Florida.
I think the trend here starts to turn.

Someone is going to have to help me understand what the big deal is with having to win the season opener. It's just another game and at the end of the season it will go in the same W or L column as all of the others. So what if we win the opener but lose the next 5, or lose the opener and win the next 5? Which is more favorable?
If the latter is ideal why do we care about losing the first one?

great so we’re due for 9 straight season opening wins

It’s actually crazy that you don’t see how big it is to start the season 1-0

It’s more so the fact that it’s a non conference game. The SEC is tough enough that you know you are usually going to take a couple of conference games. 10-2 vs 9-3 is the difference between making the playoff or not.

How about NOT having a razor thin margin for error every season where you have to go 10-1 with an SEC schedule to have a chance? How about NOT getting humiliated on a national stage for the umpteenth time? How about actually starting a season with positive momentum instead of feeling like you’re playing from behind all year? When you continuously lose the first game every year, your season ends when you lose a 2nd SEC game. It’s hard as hell to go 7-1 or better in conference play so you’re kneecapping yourself every year with these season opener losses.

It’s funny when the “new” accounts expose themselves right off the bat.

Sounds like Kelly is just a 9-3 kind of guy, except last year when he went 8-4.

It’s funny when someone has a different opinion on here, the hive mind collective immediately attacks them.
I want Kelly to succeed as badly as everyone else on here does. But I’m not going to get my hopes up just to be completely devastated, especially after the last 3 openers. Having a pessimistic viewpoint about the season prevents me from getting upset. You don’t have to think like this, but that’s how I do.

Benefits of winning the opener:
W on the schedule.
Players strengthen their confidence in their coaches and everything they have instilled in the off season.
Players strengthen their confidence in each other.
Much easier for a team to “gel” over a win than a loss. (A loss does offer opportunity for gelling but it takes more initiative than after a win)
Positive momentum moving forward into the season.
And in this particular case, giving Clemson a big ole L in their own house.
All the work the players and coaches put into their craft in the offseason feels “worth it” when a team wins the opener. It’s like steroids to ALL the intangible things a team requires to be great.

I am optimistic to a point...I really think we could win this game...
BUT
I agree, I'll believe it when I see it too.

This guy gets it. It's about having your team ready to start the season and not having to regroup after a loss in a winnable game.
Won't matter as much with the CFP, but people remember your nationally televised loss if all things are equal.

Someone has win this game. Clemson hasn't exactly lit the world on fire in their opening games the last few years.

It's always been better to lose early than late. But losing a season opener is never ideal.

I think the trend here starts to turn.
It has nothing to do with BK's trends as a coach before the transfer portal changes. BK is leaning heavily on portal players from year to year at LSU, like most teams are. New portals players need time to get comfortable with their new team/scheme. This problem didn't exist when BK was at Notre Dame. One way to minimize this problem is don't schedule a top ten team in their home stadium for the first game.

Very well said, but many on this board live in fantasy land.
