Started down a wormhole. I get chiggers bad when i step out of the truck on one place i hunt. Whether i spray down or not. Deep
Woods off must not be effective against em. Made me start wondering if indians or civil war soldiers had any hints as surely they got into them pretty badly. Will
Keep trying to read about this subject but linking this interesting thread. If anyone has any remedies or treatments would love to hear about em. Looks like bacon grease or fat was a deterrent back then.

Some people attract bugs more than others no matter what, I’m one of them. Genetics / chemical scent from sweat play a factor

When you get home jump in a swimming pool for a couple of hours and chiggers/ticks are gone.

I use the Sawyer's permethrin spray on my pants, boots, and socks. Works pretty well for me.

I agree that there is almost nothing worse. A few years ago I was laying on my back in pine needles to shoot at squirrels cutting the cones. I ended up with chiggers on just about every part of my body. The most miserable week of my life.

If you live in chigger country you will eventually get immune to them.I live on family land where my grandfather farmed,my Dad was raised. We visited at intervals,as I got older spent more time there fishing, hunting roaming the woods.Would aways get chiggers(we called them red bugs).
Eventually we built a house and moved there, would spray the yard for ticks and chiggers but when I went in the woods I would get them.
After about a year I never got them anymore.

I always wondered why my grandparents never got them.

Be sure to follow the directions for Permethrin. I started out just spraying my clothes when I got to my spot. Found out later it’s best to spray your clothes the night before and let them dry. And it works for weeks, even through wash cycles. I think it’s very harmful to cats too. And it gives you Parkinson’s so if nothing else, eventually you’ll shake off the ticks & chiggers.

Rubbing alcohol on a washcloth works pretty well. Stops or greatly reduces the itching.

Get permethrin in the yellow spray bottle. Deep woods and sprays like that have never worked for chiggers for me personally. I spray all of my turkey hunting clothes down with permethrin about 1-2 days before hunting and then spray down my boots before going hunting and it has worked great.

Correct. Once four of us went on a hike, well sprayed down. When we checked for ticks afterward, three of us had one or two, the fourth guy had a dozen.

Granny used to add a cup of bleach to our bath water when we were little to make em stop itching. I don’t know if it really did any good or not.

Grandfather used to be a big turkey hunter when he was alive. He swore by the cup of bleach in the bathwater to treat chiggers. No idea if it really works.
