BATON ROUGE — A new law that increases the penalties for drivers who linger in the left lane on highways took effect Friday.

The new law increases fines for those traveling below the speed limit in the left lane to $150 on first offense, with increases by $100 for each subsequent offense. A 30-day jail sentence can also be levied.

The new law lowers the threshold from 10 mph to just 1 mph below the speed limit.

sounds great, but will it actually be enforced? hopefully, but it won't be enough to make even a noticeable difference.

I'm middle aged and only once in my life have I seen someone pulled over for this. I was driving I-12 from Hammond to BR one evening. A cop passed me prolly going around 80. Suddenly he was impeded by a slow left lane driver, which allowed me catch back up with him. I actually slowed down to allow the cop room to get over and pass him in the right lane, but he wasn't having it. Apparently it was the principle of the matter. lol. He was on that dude's bumper, flashing his headlights, honking his horn, etc. Finally after about a minute or so, he lit him up and pulled the dude over. All right in front of me. Curious if he actually gave the guy a ticket or not.

Agreed. The actual law needs to be “slower traffic keep right”. If someone is trying to pass
You, then you need to get over and let them pass.

So it's only legal to drive in the left lane if you're speeding?

I wouldn’t be mad if my wife gets a ticket for this. She can’t get this concept through her stubborn arse head and it’s caused several arguments while she was driving.

Texas has this (there is no "slower" qualification, you simply have to move right if you are able,) and it makes zero, zero difference. In a 30 minute commute on I-10, probably 30-40 cars could have been ticketed for left lane camping, and nobody ever, ever gets pulled over for it.

Harris county is far more concerned about solo drivers in the HOV.

Left lane is always way smoother so until they fix the roads, I will be in the left lane,

This is the key point....we can pass all sorts of laws but if they are enforced it's all moot.

AL and I think MS have no cell phone law, yet no one ever gets pulled over for texting while driving.

I have yet to see any sign of LEOs enforcing any laws on any roads, save the two locals who sit on I12 by Millerville. And I seldom see them doing anything.

Pretty sure THAT WAS the law. There are signs to that effect all up and down the highways.

The planned enforcement was to allow the State Trooper to get behind the car impeding traffic, take a photo of the car with the speed embed in the photo. They would send you a ticket in the mail.

If you challenged the ticket the officer would show up to court.
