Two years ago today, the state of Oregon kicked its commonsense gear into overdrive and left New Jersey in the dust — by rescinding its ban on self-serve gas.

That made the Garden State the only state in America still clinging to this outdated prohibition.

It’s long past time New Jersey follow suit.

To that end, state Sen. Jon Bramnick (R-Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, Union) recently introduced legislation, the Motorist Fueling Choice and Convenience Act.

NJ also had some crazy law where Costco had to allow non-members to use gas pumos.

Who wants to get out of the car in the winter and pump gas? That’s for poor states.

A friend of mine at LSU had a roommate from NJ and they were going somewhere and he wanted the roommate to pump the gas and the roommate explained he had no idea how to do that. The LSU baw from Mississippi had his mind blown by that scenario.

My first big business trip while starting out my career was to northern New Jersey. I chauffeured around my boss for a couple of days, then the fun started.

In a panic racing to Newark airport to catch our flight, I stopped at a service station to fill up before returning our rental.

I still remember my boss laughing at my confusion when an attendant wouldn’t let me pump my own gas, and me asking where were the self-service pumps.

Shortly after I moved to New Jersey I stopped for gas, didn't feel like waiting and got out to do it myself. The attendant looked at me like I was crazy.

Back in early 2009 I had bought a car in WA and was driving it back to Baton Rouge, I stopped for the night in Eugene, OR. I thought the dude coming up to me was trying to jack my new car at first (it was 1am, after all).

Big Labor has been against self-service. Workers aren't unionized, but unions have come out against the act anyway.

Just another example of things that should be decided by the free market and not some politician.

Lived in Oregon for a few years. Could not pump my own gas. Was actually pretty nice on the hot summer days.

We still have a full service gas station in our town just like the old days, the gas is a little more expensive but sometimes it worth it.

I see both parts of it how it would be nice for someone to do that but at the same time, it’s really easy to pump gas.

Plus, i don’t wanna turn my car off while an attendant pumps the gas

Half the moron drivers in Tampa have New Jersey plates. Wish all those stupid motherfrickers will go home, permanently.

New jersey had really cheap gas I remeber. But the full service is that they only pump the gas. Its not classic full service. No one checks your oil or tires or anything.

Why would that be illegal? First I’ve heard of this.

My dog would lose his shite. He goes into murder mode from the passenger seat anytime anyone within 100 yards just looks at our direction. Roll down the window, and he's everyone's best friend. Rolling the window backup engages murder mode.

I was in NJ earlier this year, I pumped my own gas. I guess I'm not following something here.

I worked at a full service gas station on the Farmerville courthouse square in high school (1975, 1976 and 1977). We also fixed semi & tractor flats, did oil changes, and some simple mechanical work. Some people bought $1.00 worth of gas and wanted you to check oil, transmission fluid, air in the tires, etc. Some high school girls might buy 25-50 cents worth just to say hi. I was the hottest thing on the courthouse squre, except for the inmates in jail on top of the courthouse.
