"The Superdome is the greatest stadium ever built"

We haven’t done a lot right in New Orleans over the last 50 years. But the Superdome is certainly one of our city's greatest achievements, something we can boast about with unabashed civic pride.
The Superdome is not only one of the most iconic buildings in the world; it also is arguably the greatest stadium ever built. An architectural wonder and engineering marvel since opening in 1975, the Dome stands as a monument to the ambition, ingenuity and creativity of our state.
In stumping for its construction in the late 1960s, Louisiana Gov. John McKeithen boldly predicted that the Superdome would be “the greatest building in the history of mankind.”
A half-century later, the Dome hasn’t just delivered on those grand expectations. It has exceeded them.
quote:
Muhammad Ali, Tom Brady and Michael Jordan — three of the greatest athletes of all time — competed and won championships in the Superdome. Can any other venue in the world make such a claim?
Joe Burrow, Carmelo Anthony, Brett Favre, Anthony Davis, Jon Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Len Dawson and Roger Staubach also were crowned champions in the Dome, while some of sports greatest mentors and leaders — Nick Saban, Eddie Robinson, Mike Krzyzewski, Bill Belichick, Dean Smith, Don Shula, Bob Knight, Joe Paterno, John Calipari and Bear Bryant, among others — have coached there.
The roster of entertainment stars who have performed under its iconic white roof includes Frank Sinatra, Mick Jagger, Whitney Houston, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Prince, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.
In its 50-year existence, the Superdome has generated billions of dollars in direct and indirect spending for the region. It also has generated hundreds of jobs, revitalized the Poydras Street business corridor and attracted professional sports to the city.
Today, the Superdome stands as the most important capital project in Louisiana history and the city’s most valuable commodity other than the French Quarter.
While its domed peers in Houston, Detroit, Indianapolis, Minneapolis and Seattle have long since become obsolete and demolished, the Superdome has endured the test of the time and remains a state-of-the-art facility, recently hosting its record eighth Super Bowl.

hard to argue against the dome. do feel like some of the amenities in the luxury boxes could be better...
it definitely isn't the greatest building in the history of mankind though

let’s get Peter Theil’s thoughts on this

Pope John Paul II said Mass there.
The two main reasons it lasted so long:
1. It's a multipurpose building. During the spring and summer it hosts conventions, and Endymion holds its post parade extravaganza there.
2. If you were going to build it today, the ideal location would be....where it already is.

That's easily the most flattering picture of New Orleans ever taken.

Left out JYD/Stagger Lee winning the North American championship belt in Mid South Wrestling. Always drew 25k to the dome. Should be hanging on the wall of fame. Beloved in the city of New Orleans.

How many domed stadiums were built after the Superdome and have been imploded or are sitting inactive? Louisiana hit it out the park with this one.
I’ve been to several games in Allegiant Stadium in Vegas. The Dome is a better place to watch a game IMO.

People like to shite on Drew Brees but you can thank him and Sean Payton for their time with the Saints for the city and state to keep the dome first class. I don’t see it getting all those improvements if they were the same old Aints I grew up with.

Colosseum is probably better/more historic

Katrina helped with insurance money too. Personally, I really dont see the Saints leaving, even if Gayle sells. Nowhere else to really relocate, except for San Antonio, and that's a slim chance. Especially with the Jones family could squash that idea real quick.

Between 1965 (Astrodome) and 2002 (Ford Field), several dome stadiums have been built and later demolished. That's 37 years. The Superdome is the only one still standing.
I believe one of the biggest reasons for that is its location. Building it right downtown, close (and walkable) to just about everything makes it extremely hard to replace.

Only because we can’t afford a new one.
I wish we had Jerry World

Author forgot Bono and U2 performing there multiple times...
I saw a MLB game in there when I was younger...exhibition game featuring the Yankees.
Roberto Duran vs Sugar Ray Leonard...No Mas!
As an LSU fan, the last three football titles were all won there...
I would not trade the Superdome for something as soulless and characterless as Jerry World...

The Astrodome hasn't been demolished... yet.

It’s an awesome concept. Every stadium below the 37th parallel should be a dome.
