Who will get Trump's endorsement in Louisiana's U.S. Senate race? It could be decisive.

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy and his three Republican challengers will begin drawing sharp distinctions among themselves at some point in the upcoming Senate primary. But in the meantime, they are all competing for the endorsement of President Donald Trump.

No one can say for certain whether Trump will favor one candidate or when he might do so. But everyone agrees that any endorsement from him will pack a punch.

This has prompted the four Republican candidates to tout their MAGA credentials at every opportunity.

State Treasurer John Fleming said he worked in the White House during Donald Trump’s first term as president, 10 steps from the Oval Office.

Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta said he chaired each of the Trump campaigns in Louisiana.

State Sen. Blake Miguez styles himself as an America First Conservative who will be a reliable Trump ally.

Cassidy, who formally announced his reelection campaign Friday in an event at Drago's in Metarie, notes he supported Trump’s cabinet nominees, provided a decisive vote for the president’s One Big Beautiful Bill and works directly with Trump.

“I’m the only one who actually speaks to the president,” he said during a news conference Wednesday.

Trump is casting a looming shadow over a race in which the candidates in January will qualify for the April semi-closed primary.

“All the Republican candidates are trying to be the Trump candidate in the Senate,” said John Breaux, the former Democratic senator. “But only one can be that candidate. It’s a different world now.”

quote:

Speculation is rife that Trump won’t back Cassidy because he committed the cardinal sin of being one of seven Republican senators who joined all Democrats in voting in 2021 to prohibit Trump from holding office again under an impeachment article that accused him of “inciting violence against the government of the United States” with the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

quote:

Cassidy has faced criticism that he is bending his principles to try to get back in Trump’s good graces. Trump endorsed Cassidy when he won a second term in 2020.

Cassidy seems to be doing everything he can to at least get Trump not to endorse one of his challengers. With Fleming, Skrmetta and Miguez already in the race, U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, R-Baton Rouge, is seriously considering joining them, according to Republican political insiders

On Wednesday, Cassidy brandished his MAGA qualifications, telling reporters that he played a key role in getting three cabinet members confirmed — Pete Hegseth at the Defense Department, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at the Health Department and Lori Chavez-Deremer at the Labor Department.

Cassidy also noted that he stood directly behind Trump when the president last week signed the senator’s bill that aims to reduce fentanyl abuse.

quote:

We’re done being fooled by weak Republicans like Bill Cassidy who only support President Trump to get elected,” Miguez says on the website. “Bill Cassidy had his shot. He missed. I won’t.”

His comments play on Miguez being a world-class competitive sharpshooter.

quote:

Fleming said Trump is proving to be the most consequential president since Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served from 1933-1945.

“People really believe in him," Fleming said. "His base certainly does. He has tremendous impact. His word when it comes to endorsements is very powerful.”

I’m guessing the one that didn’t vote to impeach him.

Political reality is Cassidy and Trump need each other at the moment and it will likely stay that way through the midterms.

Cassidy has big money and is well placed if Trump stays in the sidelines. Cassidy can keep Trump on the sidelines by voting correctly on Trump supported measures and various nominees.

I have no doubt Cassidy will prove to be a thorn in Trump's side after he's secured the Republican nomination. Hopefully Republicans can add a seat or two in the Senate and make losers like Cassidy less important.

The politics are pretty straightforward as much as Trump would like to destroy Cassidy.

I suspect Trump stays on the sidelines as long as Cassidy keeps up the MAGA act.

I don't think Trump will weigh in during the first primary round if you still have Fleming and Miguez in the race (and possibly Letlow). With that many, there's not a path for anyone I see to get 50%+1.

So there will be a primary runoff to see which candidate is the Republican in the General Election. I think with multiple anti-Cassidy Republicans in the race, and the money and political backing he still seems to have from local officials and such, we can expect Cassidy to be one of the two that makes the primary runoff.

I'd be very curious if President Trump gets involved at that point, endorsing the non-Cassidy Republican.

First term Trump was vulnerable to arse-kissing.

This ain't first-term Trump.

You are ignoring something called political reality which is something Trump understands pretty well.

Cassidy is extremely well funded, there is no credible candidate at present to oppose him. Trump isn't going to back a certain loser.

The Senate margins are so thin that Trump needs Cassidy. Trump knows this, Cassidy knows this.

On the flip side, Cassidy at a minimum, needs Trump on the sidelines.

This is just politics.

Dumb bel Edwards, who has been twice elected statewide, can put this seat at risk for Republicans.

And I'm telling you all this as someone who absolutely hates Cassidy.

Cassidy is the lowest form of political scum possible. I respect Pelosi more than that back-stabbing, self-serving, mother fricker.

Trump could blow him on live TV, still not voting for that piece of shite.

in 2020, when Cassidy was running for reelection, he wrapped both arms around Trump and pledge to be MAGA. Then, within a few months of getting reelected he stabbed Trump in the back by voting to convict him in the sham impeachment trial

Now, Cassidy is once again running for reelection and trying to wrap both arms around Trump and pledging to be MAGA. Sound familiar?

He has proven to be a liar and Backstabber and unreliable. That is not an opinion. That is simply a fact.

Because of that, I do not believe that Bill Cassidy can get 50% in a Republican primary in Louisiana.

Prove me wrong

Trump won’t endorse anyone. If it is Cassidy vs JBE in the election you have to vote for Cassidy

The fact that you believe this is partly what's wrong with your shitty state. We used to think like this too.

Trump doesn't need Bill Cassidy. John Fleming is legit and if yall would get your heads out of your asses you could start to go up like MS is doing.

But keep voting in pos snakes, it's what LA does.

If Trump somehow endorses Cassidy, I'm never voting in any election again. I will probably just completely shut off all politics. If there's no backbone there, then what does anything really even matter anyway?

Part of the republican problem is these parish republican clubs. They pushed Landry and now won’t speak out against his bullshite. If your local chapter stays on the sidelines they’re just kissing Cassidy’s arse.
