About to start watching on Hulu. National Geographic and PBS Front Line are the two most venerable documentary makers in my opinion. I will keep everybone posted

The intro seems extra social justice-y, but hopefully we'll take a turn for the better here.

Couldn't be any worse than Spike Lee's Katrina doc.

Probably a bunch of racism and global warming propaganda.

I love the guy in the commercial who says “ we’re from New Orleans. We know how to take care of ourselves.” If memory serves me, that was the biggest problem. It seemed like nobody in NO proper had the ability to take care of themselves. When I would drive through Slidell or south miss I would see plenty of people taking care of themselves. I’m sure this documentary will be sure to cover those people too.

Folks during Rita seemed to bounce back fairly quickly.

I mean one could argue looting is a form of taking care of yourself.

It’s a shitty way to take care of yourself but still

caught the last 3 episodes cause my wife was watching

Pretty much was only focused on the dome and the convention center. The images of all the young kids are brutal

I don't think it was intentional from the film makers because they paint a lot of the propused changes to New Orleans post-Katrina as racist. That black communities were the ones being potentially new green spaces. The last episode can be read as an indictment of why New Orleans' politics is pretty doomed.

FEMA comes out looking like complete shite so that was fairly refreshing

All the stuff on the looting, which I totally understand why those people were looting CVS, was washed as media fear porn. A lot of don't believe your lying eyes and forget the images of looting non-essentials. I don't blame anyone for stealing food, water, diapers or whatever. Being stuck at the dome in 90+ degree days with nothing had to have been absolute hell

It is in line with stuff you see out of liberal people in Houston that pretend there wasn't a crime wave. Some guy at Rice did a study on it. It unironically said if you ignore the spike in murders and robbery, there was no crime wave

At the time, it was the single largest evacuation in American history. But no one remembers that, they only remember the ones who stayed or couldn't leave.

So, where is Ray Nagin now?

He was released from prison in 2020.

National Geographic out with new 5-part doc on Hurricane Katrina

My personal documentary was a lot longer than 5 parts as I lived between Shreveport, BR, Mandeville and Covington in and out of hotels with a 9 month old and a 4 year old for 3 months until I could get my house into an occupiable condition. I know I was not alone and there were many in much worse circumstances. I'm thankful for the friends, family and random strangers that helped along the way.

Lemmie guess.. not much mention of “The Landmass”. Where the actual windward side of the hurricane landed.

Katrina was not racist and was not prejudice.

It was okay. The one on the tsunami in 2004 was excellent.

If Katrina happened again to New Orleans, would it be the exact scenario as ‘05? Better or worse? Would the death toll be higher or lower?

There's so much drama that happened in New Orleans - the poorly coordinated evacuation efforts, the tragedies of the Superdome, Kanye West dropping a Tweet before Twitter even existed, the lack of maintenance on the levees.

But if the levees hold, the "big" story doesn't happen. After the storm passes, most of the residents can return to their homes.

Noun versus adjective.

Grammar isn't racist either.
