Catching Kittens Update: Pics

Long story short, my daughter has been bugging us for a cat for a while now. I'm not buying or "adopting" a cat for a fee.
Turns out a friend of mine has a tabby cat that showed up recently and had a litter of kittens about 2 months ago. Most are tabby's like the mom, but 2 are beautiful calicos (which we know are female) and one is a bright orange (no idea about the sex but a good looking cat nonetheless).
I'm told they are free, but we have to catch one of these wild arse kittens.
I don't have time to try to start feeding and gaining their trust as the friend doesn't live very close by. I'm thinking of just trying to snatch one with welding gloves and get it in a cage.
I come to powerful collective mind of the OT. Any tips for pussy wranglin'?
ETA:
I just went over to scope the situation. We were going to set a trap, but a little tuna on my finger brought them in close. I could have grabbed one, but I don’t have any supplies. I’m going to get the stuff my daughter needs for the cat and go back in the next day or so…

Get a laser pointer and lead the cat directly under your feet. Pick up cat.

I've got a live trap, and I intended to leave it if we are not successful. I worry about the cat getting hurt if it gets caught and freaks out, plus no guarantee it catches 1 of the 3 specific kittens we want.

This doesn't sound like a bad idea at all.

Can they be domesticated once they’ve grown up feral? I always thought not, or maybe it varies.

You can prob get a free domestic kitten from one of the animal shelters….fixed, shots and all.

I recommend Gerber chicken baby food (the puree kind) to lure a kitten. You can grab it while it's eating.
It will be very scared for a while after, though, probably even too scared to eat. But once it calms down you can start holding it and getting it used to you.

I believe the orange gene in a female generally results in a calico cat, but the orange gene in a male generally results in an orange cat. The orange one is probably a male, and orange males tend to be friendly and good mousers.
I'd go for the orange one using either tuna fish or chicken livers.

From AI

Yes, it is possible to domesticate a kitten even if it has grown up feral, though it requires patience and a tailored approach, according to some animal experts. The younger the kitten, the easier it is to socialize, with the ideal window often considered to be before 8 weeks old. While adult feral cats are generally not considered suitable for domestication, older kittens can still be tamed with consistent effort and positive reinforcement.
The clock is ticking. My friend said the cat started hanging out under his shed a couple of months ago. He just saw the kittens last week and their eyes are open, but the mom is still carrying them around with her mouth.

get one of the males instead of the females. female cats are usually really weird or overly friendly. males are usually much better as pets.

Not sure where you are but Spay Nation has a feral cat program

SpayNation feral cat policies:
To receive the special $40 feral cat pack, cats MUST come to the center in a humane trap, NOT in a kennel, not in a carrier. No exceptions.
?
We have traps available for you to borrow for a fully refundable fee of $100 for standard traps and $185 for drop traps. We will teach you how to use them and give advice on trapping. You can pick up traps at our center between 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, or by appointment. Please call in advance to check availability.

Yeah. Growing up out in the country, this seemed to be a pretty regular occurrence. See preggo mama cat hanging around, feed her and watch, and when she had the litter, it turned into a big quest to find them as soon as possible, searching old barns, sheds, etc.

If they are only a few weeks old and not yet weaned, you should probably wait before taking one. I don't know the ideal timing but I think you get better behavior if you don't grab them too young.

You are likely NOT going to walk up and snatch one. Most kittens are at feral. Meaning, they will haul butt when you are within 25 feet of them.
As another poster stated you will need to trap it. The troubling thing is you will likely catch other cats several times before you get the kitten. I would ask your friend to put the trap out and try to catch it. It might be immediate. It might take several days. You need to also have your friend bring it in the trap to the vet to be spayed or neutered.
We have been trying to catch 'certain' semi-feral kittens around our house for several months. The best shot at catching them is for someone to hangout around the food bowl daily. Let the kittens get comfortable with the presence of humans. In the absence of this it is a crap shoot at best.
