I thought last year was supposed to be the super cicada year.

This year feels like it’s much louder. Like at times can hear them in door or in the car.

Here it was 2 years ago they were crazy. It's not nearly as loud this year in central TN.

Those were periodical cicadas, and were only in certain areas. They were deafening where we are last year, and we had three different species coming out.

What you're hearing now are annual cicadas. They seem to have had a better year this year than the past few, but they never have the numbers that periodicals have, because they just don't need to have those numbers.

This thread is the cousin of the “it gets hot in the summer” threads

Last year in central Alabama they were the loudest I’ve ever heard. I could hear them over the lawn mower in certain area’s.

It's been quiet where I live. I thought Cicadas were a late summer thing though.

If you listen closely, they're screaming out the forecasted crawfish prices for next season.

The ones in my area started out pretty quiet this year, but as summer has progressed they've gotten deafening. I love it. I find it relaxing. I live on a wooded lot, bordered by more woods, so I think I get more than the average suburbanite.

Heard them in Asheville in May. First time hearing them like that. It sounded like a natural gas pipeline hum.

You all had Brood XIV emergence this Spring. That's a 17 year cicada. If you hear them in the Spring months they are no doubt periodical cicadas. They're gone by the time of annual cicada emergence in the Summer months.

I had a fairly large colony of cicada killer wasps take up residence near my house. They have built a bunch of nests in the hill behind our outdoor kitchen and stocked the holes with cicadas. So, I’m not even hearing the usual amount this year.

I’d rather hear cicadas than gunshots

A couple of weeks ago, I ended up walking down the wrong path in a swamp and it got deafening for 2-3 minutes. It felt like I was being growled at it was so loud. Kinda creepy

I also am pretty sure I heard them outside in someone’s house yesterday. So it went through windows and multiple rooms and could be heard over air conditioning. Pretty loud
