The 20th anniv of Katrina is a month away. Does it still haunt you or did you make peace?

I have a cousin that had his house in Pass Christian completely destroyed. He's still jittery about discussing that whole time period when he had to evacuate and stay in Houston for months. His family was fine, but he thinks his dad wasn't ever the same after that. He said the storm ended his childhood blissfulness too.
For the people here that had to deal with the aftermath, especially if you stayed and survived the storm, what are you feeling as August 29th approaches?

I am never in the city or Saint Bernard without thinking about it.

The abject failure to take advantage of the golden opportunity to unfrick New Orleans continues to haunt me (and piss me off).
The migration of NO trash to BR also haunts this area.

I’m there every day and I haven’t thought about it in many years unless someone else brings it up.

I think about it all the time. I still vividly remember how brown the city was from all the dead vegetation and the smell.
I don’t think either of those things will go away.
This is the wrong board to ask though

Royally fricked up BR and went from a great college town to a struggling city.

I remember walking to class from the old Alex Box lot and watching a Chinook helicopter take off from Bernie Moore.

My parents, including me as I lived with them, and most of my family lost everything. I'm totally fine with it. Maybe it's because I was in my teens at the time but to this day, I really dont cherish any material items so I dont think it would affect me as an adult. I have insurance and that will replace those material things and memories are just that, a storm wont take those.

Grateful it provided the kick in the arse to move away and not look back. Annoyed I didn't reach that conclusion earlier.

20 years and there are still remnants of blue tarps on houses in NOLA that have never been touched

Lost everything
Moved on
I try not to think about it

Put it behind me a while back, but living 100 yards away from the 17th St. Canal Breach I'm not looking forward to all those Grayline Tour Buses coming back in August to "celebrate" the anniversary.
My father-in-law used to tear into their asses back when we were gutting houses and the tourons were blocking the streets and walking into abandoned houses around us.

Houston took in a lot as well and it wasn't for the better

Katrina was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was stuck in a rut in a dead end job, broke, and divorced. I was forced to make the changes I never thought I’d be able to do
I’m now retired, financially stable, happily married and living the good life

I was thinking about this a couple days ago.
I don’t like thinking about Katrina because the world around me was instantly and radically changed.
It’s like if you moved from your hometown and returned 25 years later and don’t recognize anything, but without the 25 years.
I work in the CBD. - Not anymore.
I go to the gym after work. - Gym is gone. Not anymore.
I have friends in the city. - Houses are destroyed or uninhabitable. Not anymore.
I know of lots of cool places to go in the city. - Not anymore.
I know the bad areas in the city. - Not anymore.
Financially it was the best thing that’s ever happened to me.
