Crossing the Canadian border for a day

Since I've never crossed any border by car, what typically do border agents look for? Fairly quick and simple process since I won't have any luggage with me?
Passport, obviously. I'll also have my physical license.
Other than that, I'll be in a rental and will only be in Canada for 10 to 12 hours before heading back.

Make sure you hide the drugs and illegals really well.

How many guns are you transporting and how much cash will you be bringing back?

That's it really. Might ask you about you rental or where you are going.
Tend to be easy enough buy have been grilled a few times.

I believe they will check your criminal history. If you've ever had a DUI expect to be denied entry.

I’ve been to Canada a bunch.
I’ve heard a Canadian comic do an accurate bit on their version of Border Police (Canada Border Services Agency = CBSA)
Paraphrasing-
“In Canada, we have aroond 40 million people. Almost all of them are really nice. The rest are in the CBSA.”

Did this on 4th of July weekend in a rental. Expect them to ask you to exit the vehicle and they will search it. It may add 30 mins to your trip so bake that in if you have a certain time to be somewhere.

My husband and I both have right to carry. On our last trip that triggered the Canadian feds who pulled our car out, demanded to know how many guns he owned. He responded "a lot, but none with me". They searched the car anyway. They found nothing. They just wandered off, disappointed.
eta That was the Detroit crossing.

Don’t tell them you are there for work.

Depends where you cross. If ypu cross at a major entry point like Buffalo /niagra they will interrogate you, search your car etc... Western canada usually a couple questions like where are ypu going, how long you staying, have a nice day.

They will probably ask if you have any fresh fruit and if you tell them that you do they may take it. Apparently neither country likes you to take fresh fruit across the border.

The Detroit-Windsor crossing is terrible. Rudest customs agents you will ever deal with. Port Huron-Sarnia is much better to cross at.

Used to cross 5-7 times a year at Eastport / Kingsgate with decoy trailer, dog, guns and shells. Had proper paperwork and never spent more than 15 minutes crossing. They would, occasionally, open the trailer and look inside but mostly they did not. We usually bought groceries in Lethbridge because groceries are problematic at the border. They were always friendly on both sides of the border. I have crossed in Detroit though, not hunting but just going into Canada for the day, and it is waaayyyy different, or was 20 years ago...

Primary concern: Do not bring any firearms.
Secondary concerns: Leave the drugs, as well as the fruits and veggies, at the house.
Tertiary concern: Don't be a convicted felon.

Did this recently. Was asked name, where from, purpose of visit and where we were going and address. Any tobacco, alcohol, firearms or produce in car.
We crossed just north of Jackman in northern Maine on the 4th of July.
